Billy,
I thought a more informed member may have posted before now.
My only experience with a microphonic pickup was about 15 years ago when I bought an old Telecaster,I took it to our local music shop for appraisal and a very good friend and player who worked there held the pickup close and spoke into it and it came thru' the amp pretty clearly. He later removed the pickup and sent it to a repairman for wax dipping.
I think Teles can be prone to microphony due to the amount of metal (ash tray)around the pickup.
I have'nt heard the term for a long time and I cannot remember reading anything about it on this forum.
Best regards
Billy

Thans Billy, Funny you should mention yer Tele. I just got a '74 F series that plays beautifully. I noticed however that when you pick by the neck pick up and the pick hits the pick up it makes a rather annoying clicking sound. Does this symptom imply microphonic pick up? Looks like I'll need to get some work done on this puppy. I haven't been able to stop playing this guitar for about 3 days!!

Many pickups may make a noise if you tap them, that's sometimes a symptom, but not always. Usually, a badly microphonic pickup will have a high pitched squeal with fairly high amp volume. Like Curtis said, the minute oscillations of the windings vibrating create the squeal, at least that's how it was explained to me.

One of the stock PUs on my '62 Strat was very microphonic and I got the 'recipe' for the 'wax dip' off the web somewhere. Fender Forum maybe?? The wax gets into the gaps in the windings and inhibits the vibration. Works great... but you have to have the wax at the right temp, know how long to keep the pickup immersed, etc. or you can damage the pickup.
