Gonna get to see Vince Gill at Chautauqua (near Jamestown, NY) on Friday nite.
Anyone know who will be on the steel? Last time it was Jay Dee.

Thanks in advance.

I'm pretty sure the tour that Vince just started is with a stripped-down, at least partly acoustic, 4 piece band: long time pianist Pete Wasner, long time drummer Billy Thomas (also an ace harmony singer), and bluegrass all-star upright bass player Mike Bub; no steel I don't think...

Vince toured for the past few years with a huge band; a horn section, a full bluegrass "band within a band", and Russ Pahl on steel. It's been quite a few years since JayDee toured with him.

From what I heard Vince wanted to go the opposite way from the "big" band just for a musical change, and I'm pretty sure his accountants were glad to hear it too!

Dave, that's a good question, he probably is. I'd heard that the exact line-up wasn't firmed up till close to the last minute.

Jeff is a really amazing singer and player for sure; hard to find a virtuoso guitar player that can also sing a harmony above Vince!

Bub?! Is McCoury actually taking a rest? Or has Bub moved on after, like, forever?

Bub's been gone from the McCoury band for several years, Alan Bartram (sp?) took his place. Mike stays plenty busy though and just got yet another IBMA nomination as bass player of the year (he seems to always gets nominated and has won a bunch).

I see him a lot at the local coffee-shop (and sometimes the local pub!).

Shows I'm not paying attention. Thanks. You & he are just stopping by the pub to use the phone, right?

The concert was great. Keyboard, Bass Fiddle, percussion, and Vince. 2 hours of great tunes. Pete Finney got the personnel list correct (above).
Vince did the tune he wrote to protest the Levitra commercials, that was humorous. He also explained that the 17 piece band tour left him deaf and "broke" as he said. Of course the steel was missing in "When I Call Your Name", and in "Look at Us", so I just sang it where it belonged, playing "air steel" for my date....

Vince gave a nice tribute to John Hughey with his tune "Buttermilk John".

Joe, thanks for the web link, I'll be checkin' in on you in one of your upcoming Sept. dates.

I'd go just to hear Pete Wasner. He's my favorite, and it would be great to hear him in a small band.
