I am going to do an A/B test on these two tuners in St. Louis. If you are interested, please visit me in the Excel room. I am tired of buying things without doing this. Sadly, this is not always possible.
I have been looking at both tuners for a long time. My pocketbook leans strongly towards the Peterson. But from what I have studied (ONLY from reading and looking at specs), my mind is leaning towards the PST-4; even though it is over twice the price.
In order to give EACH one the "benefit of the doubt", I called Jim Campbell (maker of the Precision Strobe Tuner) and he graciously said he would send me the PST-4, so I could try it out before I had to either send it back or pay for it. I do believe this may have been a one time situation. I am not sure he has done this before. So my sincere thanks to Jim, if this is the case.
In any case, it is supposed to be here tomorrow. I will mess around with it a little bit, before I get to the show. Then I am going to do a lengthy A/B test on my new Excel, while at the show.
Here is the link to the PST-4.

Incidently, I am told this tuner is for a much more extensive application, that falls at the low end of very expensive professional piano (and other musical instrument) tuners.
So, in a number of respects, it may be over kill. However, IF it does what I am told it will, in the case of PSG, then money is not the prime factor.
But I will not pay that kind of money, unless it proves to be very justified.
If you are not intersested in tuners, Do come by and visit the room anyway. I would like that. Mitsuo has a lot of beautiful guitars he is bringing to the show. If you are not interested in guitars, come and "sit a spell". Take the load off.

Here's my thoughts on the Peterson, cut-paste from another thread.
Used it today for the first time. Providing its within ones budget, its worth every penny. I'd say in many cases its worth going out on the limb for. Selected a preconfigured PSG E9 (where 'E' is 440) and tuned *every* pedal, knee lever, and open strings to the strobe settings... and the results were on the money. The strobe is very sensitive, but easy to see and use. I also set a Preconfigured setting for the Bass and the Guitar. Any cords were matched when played between the instruments. No more needing to wait till a song is over to retune that G# you just replaced.
It's still a great gift to tune by ear, but this unit justs makes it faster, easier and extremely accurate. It was an absolute joy to use, and IMHO is highly recommended.
The Bass player, after tuning with the Peterson VS-R, went to his original rack mount tuner and it was amazing the difference. 3 of his 5 strings were flat when his original tuner was used.

FWIW
I prefer a strobe tuner that will help me with many different instruments. I play bass, 12 string acoustic, 8 string resonator, T3 Stringmaster...and pedal steel, just not all at the same time
That is my number one reason for having different temperaments and roots programmed in.
In one venue, the concert grand is usually in tune. "A" above middle "C" equals 440Hz. Another venue, the baby grand is usually flat of that standard, and usually out of tune in general. I can easily change standards. A=437 for example.
I like the portable Peterson VSAM because I can also select the root of my tuning. Like tuning one neck to B6. Another neck to G6,etc. The temperament stays the same, only the root changes.
Handy as a pocket on a shirt!
hope this helps in your selection.
