Hey All,

Just wonderin'...

Why do I not see many (any?) S-10 C6th-tuned PSGs?

C6th is one of the most common non-pedal steel tunings (albeit in 6 or 8 string mostly) so I was just wonderin'.

I look forward to your comments.

Thanks,

Johnne Lee

I personally think it is the music that is primarily using pedal guitar these days.

If you just use the Gnashville radio stuff, which is what many players listen to and have to play on live gigs, how much of it is C6....

E9 seems to be the "money neck" these days.

I know I'm crazy... but I'm considering having one made for me eventually. I've already talked it over with a builder. I love the C6th!

I have an Excel S-10 C6. Thinkin' about selling it only because I use my D-10 exclusively and don't really need it.

Hey Jim,

I listened to as many samples of your playing as I could find. Do know if any of the readily available tracks are the Excel?

How much do you need to have for it?

Thanks,

Johnne Lee

Jeff, I'm halfway between Cleveland and Akron. This guitar is the most primitive rack's/barrels style. It came before they realized they need springs to return the racks and pedals to a neutral position. Those are the springs I'm gettin' from Coop. I'll have to drill mounting holes in the racks and on the shelf. Once that's done, it's good to go!

Johnne, sorry, but I have not recorded with the Excel. And I haven't gotten far enough along in my thinking to settle on an asking price yet. It will most likely fall somewhere between $1100 and $1600, though.

Johnne, actually the first thing I'm gonna try with this guitar is not a normal tuning of any type! It's gonna be based on Low G bottleneck tuning. I just wanna see what can be done with that. Then it will probably go into a more standard C6th. Nice thing about these old Shobuds is that they're so easy to change around. Some people think that the single raise/single lower changer is severely restricted, but it's not. You can put as many raises or lowers on one pull rod as you like. It was an ingenious design in it's day, and not complicated at all.
Lotta work to get it into this shape. But it makes me smile when I look at it!

Thanks, Jim!! Let me know when you do decide one way or t'other! Any details on the Excel would be very beneficial for a Newbie such as I.

Very good info for a Newbie like me who will definitely end up with a 'vintage' PSG.

Thanks so much, John

Al,

Your website is just an unbelievable source of information. That E9/E6 looks great and "The Real Universal", also.

Thank you SO much for posting this and for all you have done for music (and PSG) over the years. You should be really, really proud of your accomplishments. I'd wager you have influenced several generations of musicians (not just PSG players).

Thanks again,

Johnne Lee

Not sure if the S12 counts here or not. But i know for a fact my friend George Redmon plays a S12 Whitney tuned to C6th, also a keyless Williams S12 C6th, only tuning he plays. Once in a while he has a 9th type of gospel tuning he plays, but he's a C6th player all he ever plays.

I've been playing my C6th S-10 for seven years now, since I got it new from Carter. I'm more interested in rock & jazz than country, and I avoid cliches like the plague.

(I also haven't ever got paid to play steel, just guitar & bass... hmmm.)
