I've seen some reference over time to a Barcley guitar, but I did a search on the forum and nothing comes up.
In Harmony Central, there is a reference to a Barcley acoustic guitar made in Japan.
A buddy of mine in Nova Scotia has this red Barcley 6 string steel. Can anybody please tell me/us something about it. Thanks.

It took a while, but I got a pic of the Barcley steel. Apparently it has good tone. It's made in Japan. No other data is known about it.

Hi George,
I've no doubt Michael's right. Incidentally, it's very like a Jedson I had. They, too, were made in Japan and exported to the USA- and to Europe, I believe. I seem to remember somebody saying they were sold in Woolworths among other places! Can that be? Anyway there seems to have been a spate of Japanese-made Fender copies in the 70's.

Hi Ian and Michael. Nice to hear from you folks.
The guitar is in Nova Scotia and I'm in Ontario, so I only have the picture to go by. When I first looked at it, I immediately thought it looked almost like the Fender Champ I'm playing in my posting picture, except of course, the Barcley is a dual p/u. Here's a close-up of the Fender:
I've seen our department stores in the old days, Simpsons and Eatons both sold guitars but I don't think Woolworths ever sold them unless you mean like Woolco (or Woolies as they call it in the UK). Before Woolco, F. W. Woolworth here were 5 and 10 cent stores!!!!
But the Barcley certainly resembles the Fender. And, I've never seen an Aria steel in any shape!!!!!!
At 71, I thought I had either seen of or heard of most steel guitars, albeit it not the latest brands!!!

Thanks Michael. I know a chap here (now lives in BC) had a Fender Deluxe copy without legs and I can't remember if it even had a name on it. It had a thicker body than the Champ.

| Those folks were not bashful about copying Fenders were they. The tuner pans being the most obvious. |
