an A/B box has two jacks on one side and a single jack on the other. You can use two inputs into one output (e.g. either of 2 guitars into 1 amp). ....or just the opposite: 1 guitar into either of 2 amps.

A better option may be an AB/Y Box, which allows both inputs or outputs to be activated simultaneously. (e.g. 1 guitar into either OR both of 2 amps).

That's cool you're building your own, but if you're lazy like me you can get something like a DOD 270 A/B box on Ebay cheap. I paid about $10 for mine (less than the parts would have cost to make one). It seems well made and it works fine. I use it for a bypass switch for my tuner. It would work for channel or amp switching.
