I have a Gold Tone 8 string which is great little guitar and pretty inexpensive but the pickup is noisy and the top string is very weak, not great for performing. I would like to replace it but I am not sure which way to go. The Bill Laurence L-708 has been mentioned and I saw a good review of a Jason Lollar 8 string pick up.

Blade, single coil, humbucker? I have had no experience with blade and I can't find many models listed.

I am looking for a warm solid tone to help fill chords out but with enough bite for a solo to cut through and as quiet as possible.

Any suggestions?

Hi Guy

Try A tru-tone by Jerry Wallace. You might like them

I have 5 lap steels with tru-tones on them. They sound good to me.
Good Luck with your search

I've used Lollar pickups on several occassions. He can build anything. Most recently he made for me an eight string Charlie Christian like the one Alvino Rey had in an early Gibson Console. If you dream it up he'll make it.

Another option is Vintage Vibe, they are well thought of.

i don't know about the L-708 but I have Bill Laurence pickups in my Stat and love them.

Make sure you deal with Billlaurence.com and not billlaurenceusa.com.

Bobby Ingano's frypans are Lollar pickups, if that's any help. Very Happy

Talking pickups is like talking about favorite tubes, opinions vary so much and it is very subjective. It will most likely take you a bit of trial and error to find what works best for you.

My favorite 6 or 8 string PU is a P90. They cut through the mix real well and can mellow out when you pick softer or roll a bit of highs off with the tone control.

The Wallace Tru-Tones are very nice and just a bit mellower in tone.

My experience with Jason Lollar is been great. He has built me a couple of custon PUs and rewound others, all perfect.

Just my 2C and not worth much more!

Thank you. These are great suggestions and endorsements.
A P90 would be interesting. I had one in a 55 Les Paul Junior. I was a fool to sell that guitar.
I wonder about the dimensions and string spacing. I guess string spacings are not all the same. I and how well aligned do the strings need to be with the poles? Is there much tolerance?
I guess my question is about the difference between the Laurence blade pickup and single pole pickups. Are the Laurence pickup as susceptible to interference as single coil pickups are and how do the tonal qualities compare?

A single coil pickup would likely need good shielding to be quiet. I use mini shielded cable for the wiring as well as a shield in the cavity, which seems to work OK.

I get it. Twin blade Lawrences are humbuckers.
