I've come across a Gibson lap guitar, model BR-9, circa 1949-50 for $150. Is this anything worth getting?

Sure. The BR-9 lap steels are fine lap steels, and that's a very good price.

I own a BR9 and like the way it plays and sounds. The looks of the thing grew on me after a while. I don't think it is the most attractive lap steel out there but very functional.

That price is about half of what it is actually worth! Grab it!

I've had two of them. I believe they are a good steel guitar.
Gibson made around 15,000 of them from what I hear. Some are going for quite a bit more on Ebay, so the price you have is very reasonable.
I bought the first one new, in 1947 Very Happy

$150 is an excellent price. Snatch it up! I wasn't too crazy about the looks when I first saw one but now I really dig em.

According to one of the music stores here in Nashville, that is a bargin-price, because; they have one hanging on their wall for $650! But then, they also have a 7-string Gibson (Sunburst, shaped like a reg. guitar) for $3295!!!!

I have the remains of a matching BR9 amp which I've been thinking about fixing. They were not anything to rave about. My BR9 came with one in 1947.(not the one I have now)

This is the model Gibson I got when I went from an acoustic to an electric guitar.

The BR-9's are good sounding steels.

To my eye they look like a 1950's era appliance from the Soviet Union.

Gerald, surely you are referring to the ГИБСОН БР-9. Smile

Rick, that one looks a lot like mine (I was going to sell at Joliet last year, I guess I'll hang on to it).

The ones I had were the smooth finish, but I believe there were some with a textured finish also (?)

A guy I know over here was just offered approx $1400 for his.. Shocked
He phoned and asked if I thought it was a decent price,- I could hardly believe what I heard and just told him to sell it asap.
There's obviously still some people who's willing to pay almost anything as long as it says Gibson on the headstock,- and this buyer deals with vintage guitars and amps for a living! Obviously knows nothing about lap steels though.... Rolling Eyes

It's really s student model guitar, and many learned on those. I sold the last one in Joliet for $
125.00,in 2006, which I think was fair considering it is a basic model. There are usually a few on ebay, over priced in my opinion. I laugh when the sellers say how "rare" they are Very Happy
My favorite low-priced guitar is a Vega. I have one of those.
