I was thinking about this recently. Every steel player should keep a record of the serial number(s) of their guitar(s). If there was a central database available of serial numbers of stolen steel guitars available for reference, any potential buyer could refer to the list before purchase. This is very much in the same way that databases are kept of stolen automobiles.
The database could be kept up to date if owners are ever re-united with their instrument, and it would be a boon for dealers and private buyers alike to have a reference point to check if a guitar that is being offered for sale is bona fide or not. A guitar where the serial number has been deliberately obliterated would then not have much of a resale value. _________________ Show Pro D10 - amber (8+6), MSA D10 Legend XL Signature - redburst (9+6), Sho-Bud Pro 111 Custom (8+6), Emmons black Push-Pull D10 (8+5), Zum D10 (8x8), Hudson pedal resonator. Great idea Ken, and no better place for it to be than right here where most of the world's steel guitar orientated people gather.. _________________

This has been brought up several times and it sure would be great if ever put into service. I'm still searching for my first first steel. I've got all the info on it except a picture.

This is a great idea. Perhaps, as a suggestion, it should have its own separate category right up front on the Index page. That way, dealers, players and those who are unfamiliar with the site could have fast and easy access to it without searching and navigating. A great service to everyone except, of course, the thieves. |
