I remember seeing this topic in the past but was unable to find anything. Is $30/hour a fair price to charge for lap lessons?
thanks, Ron

In Maryland if you have a music degree or professional cred $30 for 1/2 hour is o.k. |

Hi Ron,
Well, based on Robert's number, I don't charge enough. I'm getting $30 per hour, at my studio, in San Francisco. I've been thinking of raising the rate to $50 an hour and $30 for a half hour, though. Once school starts, I believe I'll do that, since it seems college kids are my main draw.
Hope this helps!

I charge $30 per "Hawaiian Hour". That means as long as it takes, normally a little more, for a student to grasp the lesson.
There are'nt too many steel wannabees around...the motivation is to get more to play steel...

I think the question to ask yourself honestly is "How much would you be willing to pay yourself for lessons?" _________________ Links to streaming music, websites, YouTube: Links |

When I moved to NYC I took some lessons from Bob Hoffnar, he is a great teacher...I'm sure that he could provide valuable insights to steel players of all levels...$40 per hour is a bargain.

generally I charge 30/hr. if it's a kid paying with thier own money - less. A half hour for steel seems to short, and for pedal steel they barely get set up and have to leave . Also you can charge a monthly fee to minimize no-shows. Allow make up lessons but set a limit. _________________ Chris Kennison

Chris, if you ever find yourself on the western slope of Colorado with an hour to spare, I'd gladly pay you $30 for an hour of instruction.

hi Bill!
what town? I get on the west side of the divide once in a while - or if you come thru Ft. Collins stop by with bar and picks, I have extra steels to sit at!
But, if you are close to Cortez, there's a great steel player there named Carl Johnson. I just met him at the Winchester show in Indiana in July. His Dad is Carlton who used to play a lot.
Don't know if Carl teaches, but I wouldn't mind learning some lick from him, he's a pro guy.
Also, Del Mullen's brother (or nephew?) lives in Durango - his name is Levi Mullen. He's a good picker too. _________________ Chris Kennison

Depends where you are. I'm in rural Tennessee which has an unemployment rate of around 13%. I get $40 per month which includes a half hour lesson every week. In Nashville, 110 miles from here, they charge the same for one lesson. |
