Awesome! These "originals" are really enlightening. I always assumed that Charlie Ryan had the original song and arrangement.

Charlie Ryan did have the original song and arrangement on Hot Rod Lincoln.

Hot Rod Race is an entirely different song, recorded much earlier (1951), although it no doubt did inspire Ryan, who (along with Johnny Bond) hit it big with "Lincoln" in 1960.

Shibley's version of Hot Rod Race is the original of that song, but it was covered within a month or two by many other artists--Red Foley, Jimmie Dolan, Bob Williams, etc. Ryan himself did it around 1960.

Mitch,

I was referring to Hot Rod Race and Charlie Ryan's verison of it. I have a 45 rpm record of Charlie Ryan with "Hot Rod Race" on one side and "Hot Rod Lincoln" on the other side. I like Ryan's versions of both songs better than anybody's but never realized that Ryan's version of HR Lincoln borrowed heavily from an earlier version. For example the guitar parts are very similar though the guitar on Ryan's verison is a bit hotter. I think Ryan's versions fine tuned the lyrics of both songs to perfection.
