While this 'Nordic' style isn't my favorite type of playing, it's about the best and tastiest I've heard. The guy nails it! |

Hey Ron I found this little article.
Honolulu Minstrels, The
“The Honolulu Minstrels” is a band name that has followed a course through decades. In the mid 50 s the group was performing on a par with Rudi Wairata’s “Mena Moeria Minstrels”and proudly accepted stand-in performances for this respectable and wellknown ensemble.
In 1960 Henk Braaksma filled the position of Hawaiian-guitarist with the Honolulu Minstrels for a year before his “departure” into South American music. His “return” in 1977 was marked by leading the instrumental group “Honolulu 77”. This ensemble enjoyed successes through the 80s, particularly at the annual (Pedal-) Steel Guitar Meetings in Oudewater.
Through 1990, having added the vocal element to the band, they returned to the name
“The Honolulu Minstrels”. During the 90 s Henk continued performing with occasion-bands, especially at the annual Hawaiian Promotion Days in Heerhugowaard.
Since 2000 “The Honolulu Minstrels” have been playing in their present line-up:
Henk Braaksma : Hawaiian guitar/ ukelele
Paul van Lint : Ukelele
Bart Carels : Guitar
Hans van der Velde : Stringbass |

Henk played the March as best as I've ever heard it, I think the title got confused by a possible typo on Rudy's version, as there IS an estate called Kilohara,
But no place named Kilohana, I think..
Anyway Henk's tribute album to Rudy was also excellent, here are Henk's own words about his life and times :-

Great YouTube clips, Ron. The first one is from Rudi Wairata and the other 2 are from George de Fretes.
I friend of mine (not a forum member) wants to know if by any chance you have educational MP3 clips of this EP.
It has 2 instrumental tracks: Steel Guitar Rock and Blue Hawaiian Moon as well as 2 vocal tracks in Dutch. Unfortunately my friend lost the original record.

It seems there are many fine steel guitarists roaming around the windmills in Holland and this only exemplifies one of them. I have always known this as the KILOHANA MARCH. (Recordings going back some 40 years). This has to be the very BEST version I have ever heard ! Excellent steel work and intonation of every note. Great stuff ! |

George.....he's probably the best out there at this time. There are several other pickers that have meetings every now and then.I always used to go to these easter meetings. As a matter of fact....Basil used to go to.I don't know if he still does. But he can vouch for the serenity and companionship at those weekends. It's just like one big happy family.
There are a couple other pickers that stand out but Henk Braaksma is IMO the best there.
Right here you can hear the difference between Rudy and Henk.I posted two songs......One played by Rudy(the first) and the other one played by Henk(second)This is probably why Henk always filled in when Rudy was not able to attend a gig or meeting.
The song is called "Ticklin' The Strings".Just listen to the difference in pickin'.
Rudy Wairata
Henk Braaksma
Enjoy.

I hadn't heard these two cuts by George, and they are definitely 2 of the best I've ever heard from this regions players, and the slow one (last of the three listed TY vids) is even more to my liking, really nice.
Loved the blindfold shots!
All these guy's were obviously influenced greatly by the old players of the resonator steels. |

Ron...by any chance did Henk use a flat pick?
Sounds like it to me.
Great playing though whatever picks he's using. I think I'll set my guitars out for the trash man. LOL!

Hi RON...Thanx for those "Tickling the String" clips.
Both are great ! I do feel Henk has captured Rudi's technic and possibly improved upon it. I sure wish I could play stuff like that ! Wow ! |

Harry,
no Henk did not use a flat pick.Regular picks and a round nose bar.Rounded on both sides.
Here is a picture of him and his band.
The Honolulu Minstrels
Henk is now 72-years young and still pickin'

Looks like he's holding a Gibson EH150 in that picture. Is that right, Ron?
