Hey all, We've all been there...... " could you please turn it down a little " ? I really do love it when it is so quiet, that I can throw a guitar pick out on the floor, 10 feet away, and hear it hit. No need to be loud at all, when everyone is actually listening to you play.
I've enjoyed that experience many times. But alas, not so last Friday. A small group of about 7 people, right in front of me, just having a good time, yet they were so loud, I had to be just a tad louder, to just hear myself. I know, it's all part of the entertainment thing, but I saw this article, and thought that it would be good for all club owners to be aware of this study. You - all will get a kick out of it. Peace-out, J. W.

That makes sense,If you play loud enough that they can't hear each other talk, they will shut up and drink.DYKBC.

Too bad they didn't push it a little further. I'm thinking there is a point of diminishing returns at which it is so loud they quit drinking and leave, and don't come back. Sometimes I've seen it so loud the room clears. People hang at the back of the room, as far away from the band as possible, or go outside and hang with the smokers. Confused

"With help from the bars’ owners, the team turned the music up and down and then recorded how much and how fast people drank. The men did not know they were being observed."

What about other factors? For example, maybe the loud music scared the women away, so the men drank more.

Let me expand on the particulars of my recent experience. I play steel, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, bass, and sometimes no instrument at all. There's nothing like getting in a table's face, a sing directly to them. I play to tracks, and have an extensive song list from which to choose appropriate material from. I am more of a dinner and dancing kind of entertainer. I've played this restaurant a number of times now, and have been told to turn down just a bit, two or three times. Friday nights are party nights, and the folks are, just by nature, louder on Friday's. Now, Saturday night's are very different. They are so quiet, you can hear a pick drop. I do love that environment, because I can hear the sound come back to me from the entire room. I can tell when people are happy or stressing. For me, reading the room is essential. Somewhat different than playing with a band, in a larger club. It would seem that it doesn't take much, for a dinner house owner to come up and ask me to turn down. It only takes one complaint, I guess. But from my vantage point, It seems like an obligatory thing. My Mesa Boogie amp is set on 1, both the master and the channel levels. Sound system is good, and volume of everything is at my finger tips. Not all tracks are recorded at the same volume. And, we know we can't please everyone, all the time. I guess I'm saying... why don't club owners get it ?
I don't like to play loud. A perfect balance of everything is most pleasurable, for all. This particular job has dried up for now, due to the lack of funds, so I was told, but I smell a political rat here. Alcohol, dinners, dancing, that is our working environment, and we do it because we love to do it. Sure ain't the money. I'm done venting now, thanks for listening.
