Like a U-12, except:
Quote: |
A high G# (.012) is added as string #1, and a low E (.080) is string #14. No changes are attached to the additional strings. |
See https://b0b.com/tunings/sierra.html
FWIW, I wouldn't use the low E. Instead, I'd add a middle D between E and B, to match a standard E9th in that range. But that's just me. _________________ -𝕓𝕆𝕓- (admin) - Robert P. Lee - Recordings - Breathe - D6th - Video |

Thanks Jack & Bob. I am trying to help a friend who is brand new to steel guitar and he got a 14 string. His top string broke and I wanted to make sure he got the right string on it.
Jack, I told him he needed to bring it to you.

While Sierra published an extended U-12 tuning, every 14-string player I've met had a very personalized tuning. It's not a standard instrument. I wouldn't assume anything. Talk to the previous owner of the guitar to find out how it's tuned. _________________ -𝕓𝕆𝕓- (admin) - Robert P. Lee - Recordings - Breathe - D6th - Video |

I don't believe the D string belongs in a universal tuning. It would screw up the B6 grips. On E9 we expect to change grips as we move back and forth, but not on B6 which is more intuitive and where we don't have to account for every note. _________________ Make sleeping dogs tell the truth!

Craig,
This is the copedant that I used on the Sierra 14-string guitar I used to own. It's based on Bill Stafford's tuning using 8 pedals, 7 knee levers and a lock lever to lock strings 5 and 9 to Eb.
Keep on pickin'!

this is Sierra's U14 chart published on their website, basically the same as the one Glenn posted without the extra knees, a couple of minor variations:
