I am strongly considering building myself a six stringer. Is it possible to do a D-6? Would it be too cumberson on the lap?

Plan B
Okay, the D-6 idea is out. I like the teardrop shape. I've seen it a few times on ebay. Was it the Little Roy wiggins model? Can somebody post a picture of the teardrop, whoever made it?
Thanks, Ron

My old Carvin D6 is small enuf to fit on my lap, but you gotta have long legs to sit it out far enuf to have easy access to the inner neck.

If you're going to build from scratch, wouldn't it make more sense to build an 8 string or 9 or 10 string ? You can play every 6 string number on an 8 string but not vice-versa. Don't let the availability of an 8 string pickup hold you back. If you overlap two 6-string pickups you can get any combination from 6 to 12 strings.

I had a double six once. A Supro if memory serves. It had legs.

You could build a 12 string and just do two courses of six strings.

Every double neck I have had was not playable on the lap. The inner neck is too close and bar control was very limited.

How about two six strings and one stand???

my 2 cents.

I recently built a 10 string lap steel using an old Carvin 10 string pickup. It allowed me to use a 3/8" string spacing. I currently have a B6 tuning on it because I play a U12 pedal steel. I can get almost everything I want on that setup.

You might build one similar to those East German Herrnsdorf or Elektro Artist lap steels, there were version with 2x 6 and 2x 8 strings, but on a single neck, this one looks like it might be playabel on the lap, without legs:
