There is a Maestro brand steel for sale on Ebay that looks to be custom made, or customized after market, with a blue and white motif and the name Cliff stenciled on the PU cover. It also has a differing blue fret board, white control cover, and blue knobs.
The seller is making strong refferences towards the possibility of it having once been Stone's.
Anyone ever hear of CS being a player? |

Ron:
I knew Cliffie Stone personally and he only played stand up Bass. Cliffie started out playing bass for Stuart Hamblen in the 40's. Stuart had a daily radio show for an hour and a half each week day. Cliffie a;so did some comedy routines with Stuart. Wesley Tuttle was a regular on the program along with Cliffie's foster dad Herman Snyder AKA "Herman the Hermit". The whole show had a Saturday night dance at the Southgate VFW Hall.
Later Cliffie progressed into his own unltimately starting and hosting the Home Town Jamboree which a multitude of West Coast stars participated in. Cliffie also became one of the Country Music producers for Capitol Records. I saw Cliffie for the last time about five years ago at s Mucician's Trust Fund concert at William S. Hart Park in Newhall, Ca. About a year later he passed on. |

Thanx for the great scoops, Billy. You're a ton of wealth for info on those great day's in So. Cal.
It's folks like yourself that 'make my day' on this forum, and the only bummer is you're probably too modest to rave on in detail about your life and times, when the gettin' was good.
I grew up in the So. Gate/Maywood/Downey areas and was very lucky to do so, but just missed out by being a fraction too young for the Town Hall Party/PA Bigsby stuff that I now love. So, please expound on it all whenever you can.
Quite interesting to now know the Hermit/Stone connection! |

The Hometown Jamboree was a great show which featured
many persons who later became stars - I watched it on TV every Saturday night. Always entertaining.
The "Hometown Jamboree" show, became one of the most popular, long-running variety shows on radio and television (1946 to 1960). It literally was a launching pad for a multitude of singers, musicians and songwriters, that reads like a Who’s Who in the music world. Over the years, many were regulars; others were featured guests, which include: Tennessee Ernie Ford, Merle Travis, Molly Bee, Billy Liebert, Jimmy Bryant, Speedy West, Herman, "the Hermit," Gene O’Quinn, Billy Strange, Joanie O’Brien, Dallas Frazier, Tommy Sands, Billy Armstrong, Ferlin Husky, Lefty Frizzell, Eddy Arnold, Johnny Cash, Jim Reeves, Barbara Mandrell, Johnny Horton, Tex Ritter, Johnny Bond, Tex Williams, Eddie Dean, Wesley and Marilyn Tuttle, Polly Bergen, Freddie Hart, Liberace, and even Elvis made an appearance.

When I was subbing in Spades bands , Cliffie would come by and listen some and he and Spade would talk privately. I noticed that sometime after these talks, there would be suttle changes in some of the songs. I didn't know who Cliffie was but I overheard Duece Spriggins talking to Smokie Rogers and they were discussing Cliffie and they admired him so much. Never saw him play steel. cc |

Link to auction on eBay.
Wow, the guitar has the word "Cliff" on it so it belonged to Cliffie Stone? I've seen the same guitar with the word "Joan" on it. Think it belonged to Joan Cusack?
This particular Maestro appears to be a Canadian lap steel. I've only seen a couple pictures of these before, but they are not in any way related to either Gibson or Cliffie Stone. _________________ Brad’s Page of Steel
