I personally feel the effects are cleaner than the Line 6 units, but the downside is there is a slight discoloring of the original steel tone. As long as you get your gain structure optimized the discoloring can be minimized somewhat, but I prefer no coloration at all. There are a lot of cool effects in the unit though. Just my take...

I know Bruce Bouton and Wayne Dahl are using them. Those are two good sets of ears.

Carl, Bob Martin had one for sale here a while ago. I don't know if he sold it, you might check.

I own the lesser known desktop version: Boss GS-10
This one can comfortably sit on top of my session 500 or be taken home connected to a stereo or a computer for practise.( same software as the gt-pro)
I found out the simularities from the catalog witch featered them side by side. You lose some effects but the price was half in Europe. They were dicontinued in Europe and were available very cheap. If 19" is not important, check this one out as well.
The steel tone is clean, only two or three presets work for steel, but that's normal for a guitar fx box.

Thanks for the response guys I guess I'll take a ride to guitar center and check it out this weekend. I wanted to find something that would work good for both my electrics and pedal steels if that's possible. right now I use the podxt for my 6 strings and been using alessis quadverb and ultraflex II on the steels.
