Awhile back I wanted to give the band a little more of a classic look so I bought three of the reissue Shure SM-55 mikes, the old chrome jobs which you see in a lot of old Elvis photos.

They sound great but when being used next to an SM-58 or SM-48 it seems that the 55's require a much higher volume setting on the mixer. Example, a 58 set at 5 on the mixer would have about the same volume as a 55 set at around 8 or so. What's up with that? I've heard that these have more or less the same insides, so why do they require a higher setting.

I remember in the old days of high impedance that the older 55's seemed to be pretty hot........JH in Va.

It could just be the new cartridge is not as strong.

I don't have a 55, but I do have a SM-58 that I bought about 15 years ago. Two years ago a singer I was working with bought a new 58. Mine was definitely hotter.

We had her try both, same cable, same channel and settings. No doubt about it, mine was louder.

I believe the SM-55 mikes have a larger element, but the case design means you can't get as close to that element. Also, I think the SM-58's are more directional, which makes them seem "hotter" when you're directly in front of them.

I did the same thing with my band. The retro look is very cool, but we found the SM55 more prone to feedback. Eventually, we decided to sacrifice the cool looks for better sound and went back to our old EV's.

Jerry,
There's about 4db difference in gain between the 2 mikes.
54.5 dBV/Pa (1.85 mV) 58
Open Circuit Voltage: -58.0 dBV/Pa (1.3 mV) for the 55.
So you would have to crank it up a good bit for the difference.
