I have a Goodrich pedal on loan that is scratchy sounding. It may have not been used in a long time. I would like to return it in good working order to show my gratitude for the loan of the pedal and a steel guitar for the last month. Is there any point to trying to spray contact cleaner into the pot, or is replacement the way to go? Is it easy? I've built some amps, so the soldering is not an issue, just wonder what I'm getting into.

No. Get a new pot if you really want to thank him.

The link below show the whole procedure and a highly recommended pt. Soon I should have a video of the goodrich string routing to ease that part of the deal.

Yes, pots can often be cleaned and lubed, and give a lot more good service. You have to remove the cover from the pot to clean it, though. ALSO, remember to use a cleaner/lubricant designed for pots. (Look for one that contains a silicone lubricant.) Remove the cover, spray it good for about 5 seconds, and work it through it's range a dozen or so times. Then re-spray and work it a second time, just for good measure. Shake off the excess cleaner/lube, replace the cover, and you should be good to go.
