Here's an interview with Uncle Don, included on the 2003 album by David Church entitled "A Legend Froze In Time" (Hank Williams tribute). The file is about 25 MB, but the interview is over 20 minutes long. Listen to the legend here:

Enjoy!

I sure wish Buddy Emmons, Paul Franklin and other greats would contribute their interesting experiences in making book. I'm sure they saw and experienced things that we would all like to read about. It's unfortunate that the great Jimmy Day or John Hughey didn't relate some of their experiences (stories). We all had, in our little world, some stories but, imagine what we could learn from the pros! As for Don Helms, I met him when I was learning to play and he was a genuine gentleman. He was an encouragement to me.

It was my most fortunate experience to meet this
wonderful player and legend one evening just outside
of Greenville in the small community of Fountain,N.C.
He was doing a Hank tribute show with the Malpass
family that evening and I was introduced to Don by
Clyde Mattocks who was playing guitar that evening.
Christopher Malpass was singing all the great
Hank songs as Don played the signature steel licks
that he is so famous for. When I shook his hand and
thought about all of wonderful times and experiences
this man must have shared thru the years as he helped
to forge Country Music history,It was a feeling I
will never forget. His performance on that Gibson
steel was wonderful. His tone was great! This was
truly one of the most memorable moments of my life.
Yes,Don Helms is everything you have always heard he
was and more, certainly a true legend.
Regards,Tim
