Charlie Pride guested on a recent Wilburn Bros. Show rerun on R.F.D. T.V. and was backed by what I assume was his steel player at that time. Some very fine playing indeed. He also played the closing bit on the show with Hal Rugg looking over his shoulder. If anyone happened to see this particular show, I was curious as to who the player was.

I couldn't watch, but my guess is Gene O'Neal.

Kind Regards, Walter

Gene O'Neil was a great steel player and a great friend. He worked for Charlie Pride for 9 years. Sometimes it would be just Gene and Charlie in a station wagon working show dates with a house band. Gene was legendary for liking to play the steel guitar. Once he was driving back from a date (in the station wagon) and it was Sunday. He wanted to play so he stopped at a Church, took his steel in and played a set of gospel songs to the congregation. Gene would have liked the scene today down on Broadway in Nashville. If he was still around, he'd be hanging in there with the new cats.

I haven't seen the particular Wilburn Brothers show you are talking about but its good to hear Gene O'neil's name on the forum. I used to go down to Printers Ally and see him play at Skulls. He was a fantastic player and you could tell he got a lot of joy out of playing by how much he put into it. I'd love to see that show. I have another question about the Wilburn Brothers show that maybe one of you could answer. I have seen a lot of shows with Curly Chalker and Hal Rugg playing with the house band, but there is another guy I've seen on the show that I can't identify. He has dark hair and Buddy Holly glasses and is playing a black Emmons. Also,do they sell DVD's of the Wilburn Brothers Show and if so, where?

Bob Watson, the steel player with the black Emmons on the Wilburn Brothers show might be Doyle Gresham. He now works for Jimmy Buffet.

Always great to see Gene mentioned here on the forum. I can vouch for his love of playing. In the late 80's, Gene and I ended up in South Fla and played alot of shows together. Mostly conventions and private shows, but the last few months, we worked a nice little club on Fri and Sat nights. Almost every night when I got there, Gene would be on stage, head phones on, playin away. Many nights he would never leave the stage, just grab his headphones when the rest of us took a break. Many nights he asked me if I wanted to go find a place to jam after the gig. His wife, Julie, told us that most mornings when she woke up, Gene was already at his guitar with his headphones on. I love to play, but...... Man, I sure do miss him.

You'd better ask Don about his Black Emmons!
