I did a one hour show this weekend with a very talented young singer from Bryan, Texas named Andrea Young. I got the usual song list and a CD dub early last week and sat down to put together the charts. I was told on this one particular ballad, that they really wanted to keep the steel part much like the original recording. So when I sat down and listened to it I could see why, it was the perfect part for the song. It had a great steel intro, not technically difficult, but really nice, maybe just because it was so simple and pure.
As I listened to the rest of the song, I was really impressed at how well the steel 'fit' in the overall context, just the right notes at just the right times. The player played very interesting parts, even though for the most part they were relatively simple. I didn't know who the player was, but I told myself this record is an absolute master class on how to play steel behind a singer in the context of a song.
So I showed up at the gig on Saturday and we did a quick sound check on that tune. Andrea sounded great and I did my best to capture the original feel and taste (falling woefully short) but everyone seemed happy with it. About that time Angela's dad came by (she's only 17 now and she recorded this record when she was 14!!). He asked me if I liked that steel part. I told him it was absolutely great, and he informed me that he was able to hire John Hughey to do that record when it was recorded several years ago at a studio in Hendersonville.
Wow! did that ever explain a lot!! I know Mr. Hughey is well know for his work with Vince Gill and other major artists, but IMO he knocked this one out of the park as well, for a little unknown girl from Texas. That, IMO, is what makes a pro..
I can't seem to find a website or myspace for Andrea, but I'm going to see if can get her permission to post this tune for others to enjoy. Maybe it's just me, and other folks won't see this as any big deal. I know he played a lot of good parts on a lot of records, but hearing Mr. Hughey play this song sure made my day.
