I did attempt a Bollywood tune in the "Distant Shores" CD (2005). Reading that there is some interest in Bollywood music per a recent thread on this forum, I present here my attempt. The tune is called "Aajare Pardeshi" from the film " Madhumati". Bollywood tunes are a challenge to play on steel guitar. They are mostly played "longitudinally" on a single string at a time and require the emulation of the quivers and inflexions of the singing style.

Here is the steel guitar version

And for those that wish to hear the original vocal on youtube:

Enjoy!

Man; relaxed playing, soulful tone and top drawer intonation.

-- lovely ff amp tone after that 2nd interlude, then back to clean to take it out.

Very nice, Kay.

Thanks for posting.

Great job, Kay, both on this song and on "Paying Guest".

I note a similarity in approach for both Indian and Sacred Steel steel guitar playing - a lot of sliding along a single string, emulating the vocalists of that style.

Brad,

You are dead right. Both genres try to emulate the human voice and therefore tend to require staying on a single string. I think the earliest Hawaiian steel performances also did the same until people like Sol Hoopi'i dazzled with their magical speed and harmonies across multiple strings.

There is actually another genre of steel guitar music which, in my opinion, is prettier than the Bollywood style and it is from Kolkata and which I will call Kollywood (my terminology). More on this another time..
