Received this beauty last week, a brand new teardrop weissenborn from Lazy River. It's built in mahogany and has a surprisingly smooth and warm sound, actually more so than my standard weiss model.
I'm going to experiment with various tunings, have ordered custom sets for D6 from Newtone but I may end up keeping it in regular open-D or G.

I got a good chance to test it at the lap steel clinics I held in Denmark this weekend (it arrived the day before I left!), and the sound through the PA was the most impressive 'acoustic' sound I've ever had in any of my acoustic instruments (it's a K&K Pure Western system in it).

A soundclip may follow as soon as I decide on what tuning to keep it in (I used it for "Sleepwalk", in open-G, at the clinics).

beautiful piece of wood.
er, well of course it is more than a piece of wood.
the shape is curious. how does it feel on the lap? it appears it would be off balance being so wide at the heel end.
I look forward to hearing it on the acoustic CD.

Randy, there's no problem with the balance, it's light as a feather but doesn't move around any more than my standard weiss.

Steinar, that is awesome!
What is the scale and string spacing?

If you use low bass G you could easily retune to D and back . .

Rick, the string spacing and scale length is the same as the standard weiss (25" scale length). Here's a pic of it with my standard Lazy River and the MayBell parlor slider (plus, the old Radionette radio in the background is identical to my first "guitar amp"... )

I meant to write "open-D and G"...

Terry,- yeah, it's a beauty. And while my standard LR is in no way "sloppy" (mine was his 4th production model), there's a noticeable improvement in workmanship in this one, I simply can't find anything to put my finger on....

Whatever Rance has to call them (see other Weiss post) he certainly makes fine guitars. My walnut/spruce Weiss keeps getting better.

After a lot of experimenting with tunings and gauges I finally got around to putting on one of the custom "D6" sets from Newtone today.
It goes like this:

D - .015
B - .017
A - .018 (wound)
F# - .026
D - .036
B - .044

What a difference that made! Those gauges and that tuning brought out a bell like "chime" clarity in the Teardrop that I was unable to get in open-D, lowbass-G or even highbass-G.
All of a sudden the guitar opened up and came alive,- not that it sounded bad or anything before, it was real sweet, but now it suddenly got that little 'extra' that put it over the top and into the 'mystic' soundscape..

I wonder if this is a common feature with the Teardrop design, perhaps they were designed for 'light' tunings initially? Whatever it is, this one really came into its right with this tuning.
I'll see if I can record a sample of it over the weekend..
