Last night, BBC4 aired a full hour of clips from The Johnny Cash show from 1969-71; lots of great stuff – Loretta Lynn, Chet Atkins, Conway Twitty, Tammy Wynette, Waylon, George Jones and many more, performing with live bands. Charley Pride was one of them, singing "Able bodied man" which showcased some absolutely stellar steel work. The style was very much like Lloyd's, but it wasn't him. The guy was darkhaired, slim with a longish face, and played an Emmons. Anyone who knows who that could have been?

Spot on, Mike! I googled a pic of him and there's no doubt you're right. Never heard of him before, but he was very good.

Per,

These clips come most likely from a double DVD set which I can only recommend. Lots of great clips from the Johnny Cash TV shows, all the ones you've mentioned plus many, many more. I got them through Amazon... Smile

Kind Regards, Walter

One of the first steel players for Charley in the 1970s was Billy Poe. Billy and his daughter Michelle are both friends of mine. Joe Wright also worked for Charley, and Lloyd played steel with him too.

Thanks for the tip, I'll keep a lookout for that DVD.

Walter, can you recommend any other quality DVDs featuring good 60s-early 70s country?

About 90% of what's available seems to be of criminally low quality, musically as well as technically. I've been burned at least a dozen times so far, and it's getting a bit annoying.

Per,

You are right, there is almost nothing available on video or DVD from that era, compared to the 100s of regular weekly TB shows that were aired during that period. Every once in a while they reissue an hour or two of the material, but that is nothing compared to the amount of material that must still be in the archives....

Kind Regards, Walter

...yeah, that really is a pity. The stuff that's good is often very good indeed, artistically AND technically, and it's just sitting in some archive deteriorating... Why the people who own the rights to this stuff do not release more of it is a mystery; the market would be able to swallow huge amounts!

Ronnie Miller plays his GFI Ultra D-10 keyless with Charley Pride.
