Debashish Bhattacharya will be playing a show in Vancouver, at the Norman Rothstein Theatre tonight (September 29th). I am playing a show, so unfortunately I will be unable to attend, but I would strongly urge all steel guitarists (and anyone else) to see this incredible musician.
I have had the good fortune of seeing him several times, and each time, it has been a transformative experience.

Debashish Bhattacharya is an absolutely awesome musician ! What a thrilling evening just watching this brilliant artists' picking and steel technic. I am NOT an expert when it comes to the music of India, however the performance this evening was nothing short of amazing to behold. I have never seen or heard the 'slide' guitar played so masterfully accompanied by tabla, (twin drums) played with equal genius by Subhasis Bhattacharjee. It was a great honor for me to meet with Debashish back stage and share our admiration for one of his mentors, (the late) Tau Moe. The evening was rounded out to perfection with the unique vocal stylings of Sutapa Bhattacharjee. Debashish is without a doubt, a world-class musician! |

Debashish is an amazing musician. I'm sure most of us aren't into Indian music, but as a steel player you owe it to yourself to check him out.
He's currently touring North America (Canada, Mid-west, East Coast, Hawaii & California). Here's his schedule. http://www.debashishbhattacharya.com/tours_01.htm
Note that he's also teaching a workshop near Asheville, NC.
His website is here: http://www.debashishbhattacharya.com/

As Keoki mentioned, the performance was phenomenal; he played all three of the instruments that make up his Trinity of Slide Guitars: Chaturangui, Gandharvi and Anandi.
I found Anandi (the baby, as he called it) the most interesting, as it appears to be along the lines of a "mini" Weissenborn (hollow neck) shape, with 4 strings.
btw, it was very classy to see Keoki introduced at the beginning of the evening as guest of honour ![](http://steelguitarforum.com/smile.gif) [This message was edited by Greg Simmons on 01 October 2006 at 12:33 PM.] |

Michael Dunn built the Annandi for him.
Here's what Michael had to say about the show in an email:
Last night Debashish Bhattacharyia played here and blew us all away. He played with his brother Subashish ( tablas) and his sister who is a wonderful singer. When he is at full speed, his left hand is a blur...and there is no such thing as a badly intonated note. One of the instruments he uses is a small three quarter size 4 string Weissenborn that I made for him. He calls this an "Annandi" and plays up a storm on it.

Thank you Greg. I deliberately refrained from mentioning this aspect of the concert for fear of bragging which is not my thing. I was deeply honoured by the comments and also in meeting the great artist.
Sorry I missed seeing you at the concert Greg.
