A year or so ago I got myself an MSA SuperSlide lap steel stand. It is a simple, clean looking, well made little stand and it has just that amount of elasticity that I was looking for.
I thought I would make some adaptor parts for my main guitar, a B10, but then I never got around playing much any more.
Just recently my schedule changed a little and I pulled out the ol' fry pan (an original) and all of a sudden it occurred to me that it might just fit on that stand as is. And it does.
Together they make a rock solid platform (keep in mind I idolize Jerry Lee Lewis... ).

It may be a rock solid platform, but how stable is the guitar on it?
I see at the tuner end where there is an insert into the guitar body, but from the appearance it still looks hazardous.
What say ye?
Aloha,
Don

I know it looks hazardous... but the guitar locates/positions itself securely ON the stand.
You can just grab an lift the guitar off, so yes, if the stand would trip the guitar would fall off. In other words, they are NOT attached to another.
Still together they make a solid playing platform. It's not a combination I would leave unatended on a stage or anywhere other people could bump into it, but that's my policy with console steels and instruments anyway. But one can leave the stand, come back with the guitar, place it on top of the stand in a split second and play his heart out.
So, with rock solid, I meant that it can be plaid with no wiggle, shaking or risk to play the guitar off the stand.

JD, would other types of lap steels work on this stand such as a Fender Champion or Oahu Tonemaster or does it have to have an open style head stock? |

Andy...I have one of these stands & I put the soft velcro on the top of it & have used it for a National Dynamic, an Oahu Tonemaster, and a Champion...it has the heavy pedal steel legs...a great stand...you can see a picture on my myspace.com/terryvuncannon used with a Dynamic. |

I can't tell about other guitars but the original fry pan.
I initially bought it to adapt my B10 but never got around making some adaptor parts.
As you can see, the stand has 3 pins sticking up. The MSA SuperSlide will fit onto these pins... so would an adpator specially made for most any guitar.

I took the pins off my stand & covered the top with the soft velcro, this protects an instruments bottom while sitting on the stand. Then I took 4 "L" shaped pieces of metal & wraped them in the sticky velcro...I stick these holders to the stand & set the lap steel safely in these holders. I can change the posion of the holders to fit different laps. If you look close at my picture on my site you can see the holder. |
