Hi Folks, just letting you know there's some concert footage of me playing one of my wood bodied rope bound resonator guitars up on You Tube. The tune is Blackwood Bay,...from my latest CD.

That's a really sweet tune...

I first heard that tune a little while back, "Daddy Stovepipe" posted a vid on YouTube of him playing it on his Brauchli hollowneck, citing yourself as the composer of the tune.

Actually I added a comment on your YouTube posting, begging for a tab for this tune...
Can I be cheeky & beg again??? Winking
- or if no tab then maybe a hint or two... I've noticed a nifty slant in there!

Hi Frank and thanks for listening. Blackwood Bay is played in the key of D.
The tune originates from a long summer holiday not too long ago in my teenage years (ahem) when my friend Bill and I just hung out rowing a boat, fishing and playing guitar.
My dad taught me some slide playing when I was a kid. At 83 he still rings up to offer advice on diagonals.

Cheers

I'm going to start using 3 finger picks also. Lately I've been using my ring finger more and more to pick with. Looks like you've been doing this for a while. Great tune and well done.

Hey T.W, Paddy emailed me with an offer of making a tab for this...

Not only is he extremely talented, he's a nice guy too!! Cool

The generosity of folks on this forum never ceases to amaze me...

I just hope that with practice I can get that slant down. Winking

Wonderful Playing! Such clean tones! A++

I noticed the nut appears quite lower than standard.
( Close-ups at 2:20 )

Any reason for this?

That slant will come to you like a yawn once you "see" it and execute it a couple of times.

You made my day !

Nice tune Paddy. Smile

I've never been into resonator steel guitars very much. I mostly like the tune or the style of playing.
My favorite tune on a resonator guitar is "Kansas City Kitty" by Brother Oswald. Can someone post this tune?

Hi Joey, thanks for your and everyone's comments. I originally made this guitar for a friend of mine who was a light player, so we went for a low nut. When he came to take delivery of the instrument he showed up with both hands heavily bandaged. While riding his bike he had been clipped by a passing car and sent hurtling onto the tarmac, breaking many fingers and other bits. He took the guitar but never quite got into slide because of the injuries, and has now decided that I should make him a regular guitar so he can use it to get the full use of his hands back. I have the reso, and his new instrument will be a small short scaled regular easy to play steel string.
I find the nut lowish and occasionally hit the deck but it's my personal theory that the hard thick rosewood plays a part in tone, and if you can avoid wacking the fingerboard, it's closeness is an asset.Having said that other resos I have built have had a higher nut.
Cheers
Paddy Burgin.
