I've been looking for a simple headphone amp with no effects or frills and I stumbled onto these:

I went ahead and purchased both. Very clean sound, no distortion. You plug your headphones right into the JamPlug. The FM unit works great when you use a Walkman radio or headset radio and also has an internal rechargeable battery. There are probably a few other interesting uses as well. (On sale, too)

The JamPod looks cool too for mixing your guitar with tunes on the iPod.

How does it sound directly out of a lap steel? I have found that a lot of the little amps can't handle the signal and are too overdriven (bad experience with the Ampuplugandplay model.)

I have also asked at various guitar stores and they always caution that little amps won't work for lap steels.

Maybe I just 'lucked' out on the one I bought 2 years ago, but it was nothing but squealing distortion (and not the good kind...), except at unusably/tone sucking low vol.
I'd thot it would have been pretty cool otherwise.
I'll be interested in the verdict as well, per the steel/user review.

Well, I used the JamPlugFM with a Rickenbacher horseshoe p/u, and listen to the signal through a Sony Walkman radio and also my home receiver. The sound was very clean--not incredibly loud in this case (the amp is in the radio). I haven't tried the JamPlug yet, but I eagerly await it.

I have a jampod and its biggest problem is that the pickups on my steels need some serious attenuation to get a clean sound. It does come in handy though.

Yes, the JamPlug is very difficult to harness, and like Bob said, you've got to cut the volume down, way down. The JamPlug FM is cool, though. I'll keep both.
