It's nice to see so many women here on the forum. It would be interesting to find out how many women steel guitar players there are (All types of steel guitar) and who they are. _________________ Carter D10 8p/8k, Dekley S10 3p/4k C6 setup,Regal RD40 Dobro, Recording King Professional Dobro, NV400, NV112,Ibanez Gio guitar, Epiphone SG Special (open D slide guitar) . When I was about 18-19 years old, I got the job of a female steel guitarist in the Tommy Kizziah, West Coast Ramblers contingent at the Division Street Corral. She was about to be married and her husband-to-be did not like the prospect of his bride being out and about at all hours of the day and night with a bunch of 'musicians', both single and married.
She played a triple-neck Fender, as I recall.
Her name was Evelyn Kinee (I'm not sure of the correct spelling and I apologize) and she lived in Salem, Oregon, as did most of the Ramblers. I still hear from her, every now and then. |

Elsie Jaggers - 50/60/70s era gospel singer/steeler whom studied under Sol Ho'opi'i and played hot like him, and also some of the sweetest Hawaiian stylers you'll ever hear.
Lovey Lui - war era Hawaiian steeler that could hang with some of the best.
You'll probably never hear anything from these two, both long gone.
But, my favorite is the aforementioned, Marian Hall.
Exquisite taste on the steel, and easy on the eyes.

Man I sure miss Donna Hammitt. Remember meeting her at the Opry around 1997. We were introduced by Jeff Newman.
No offense to Eddie Lang but she sure looked good sittn on stage backing Bill Anderson.
Whatever she is doing these days I hope she is happy. I miss watching her play.
Anyways, Heres my daughter.

Well, Ron hit on my favorite. Elizabeth Lovey Lui Conn had a block chord melody style that was quite unique in Hawaiian style playing. (Only Billy Hew Len - with his pedals - or Eddie Pang come close.) Even her turnarounds were often done as huge block chords. Her style is the one I most often try to emulate (as my single string work leaves something to be desired).
There is plenty of Lovey on vinyl out there on the Waikiki Records label. She was the regular steeler with Pauline Kekahuna's Hauoli Girls. I play her on my show all the time and even featured her in January. Tune in some time... _________________ For the best in vintage Hawaiian music - featuring plenty of steel guitar - listen to...

Diana Keene
Deloris Hancock
I've had the pleasure of meeting Janice at the Dallas show in 1994, but lost touch with her.
The other 2 both cut albums back in the 70s or 80s. _________________ Please visit my web site and Soundcloud page and listen to the music posted there.

Another woman steel player from this area (Surrey, BC) is Elizabeth West. She is shown in the photo with her Sho~Bud Super Pro II.

Joan Cox..... If the male players haven't been properly intimidated, go listen to Joan sometime, you are in for a blessing. She even makes the great Johnny Cox tuck his tale from time to time! She is a monster on either neck! I'm sure you can hear some of her work by going on Johnny's web site. Sorry, I don't have the link.
Green with envy,
Jack |
