What was the last year the country music awards show really had country artist and country music on it.
That is country music as defined by most persons 45 yrs. and over?
Do you remember the artist that were on that show. In my senior moments I can't recall. Must have been late 70's or early 80's.
Just wondering.

Country changed during the DC period...Maybe there wasn't any Country music BC..And it came along way after AC...But it disapeared during DC.....DICK CLARK...I wouldn't care if the stage last night was loaded with Steels and during the show how many "Token Artist" are displayed or how many Cowboy hats are worn by those who have never shoveled manure or gave up sneakers for Boots..Last nights show and I watched it all and tryed to understand the words being sung, It is what it is...A display of future has beens who make Kareoke a better option.....A stage full of Steels and 1 or two real Country Artist, can't make that s**t Country music... |

I watched it to. It was nothing short of being a rock show.
They even have Lee Ann Rimes joining in this madness.
I too am very disapointed in country music, or what ever they call that crap.
It was hard to tell who sang more off key Kenny or Garth. Maybe I still have a chance. _________________ Custom Rittenberry SD10

But you can't deny that Carrie Underwood and Brad Paisley's tribute to Eddie Arnold was nothing short of great! |

YES------CRAP ------ I too commented that only the Eddy Arnold portion was country and thought they did a respectable job on that.
When talking about OFF KEY do not forget Ball Cap and work jeans ---- Rodney ----- he was bad.
That is what we get from lawyers selling music ----- I had to remind myself that this organization was started because the West Coast COUNTRY people were not getting reorganization nationally ---- well so much for country. _________________ Joe Naylor, Avondale, AZ (Phoenix) Announcer/Emcee owner www.steelseat.com *** OFFERING SEATS AND Effects cases with or without legs and other stuff ****** -Desert Rose Guitar S-10, Life Member of the Arizona Carport Pickers Assoc., Southwest Steel Guitar Assoc., Texas Steel Guitar Assoc., GA Steel Guitar Assoc., KS Steel Guitar Assoc. I miss the old days in L.A. when we'd get dolled up to go to the ACM awards at the John Wayne Theater in Knotts Berry Farm or some other local venue.
Like Joe said, the Academy was started to recognize West Coast artists who were getting overlooked by the Nashville bunch who thought they ruled the roost. Buck & Merle showed 'em that they didn't.
Here's an old shot of one of the Band of the Year winners from the old days. How many of 'em can you name?..........JH in Va.

Second from the right, Jay Dee Maness. Don't know the rest.
I agree with the others - bad stuff last night with the noted exception. My wife didn't catch the intro to the show as she was reading. After about the second song she asks me - "What's all that!" I said it's a country music awards show. She looked at me like I was crazy and went back to reading.
I think I've just about figured out this new country music - If someone is a rock star, and they have any hint of a southern accent - they are "country" and anything they sing is now "country music."
Just think - Carrie Underwood is the latest inductee into the Grand Ole Opry. _________________ Steeless. |

First of all IF my memory services me right The Academy of Country Music was Founded in 1964 and Bill Boyd was the Exec.Dir. as well as The Country Music Foudation with Dir.Bill Ivey. Now the Country Music Assn.,inc. was founded in 1958 and Exec.Dir. to my knowing her in 1966 was Jo Walker.Anybody out there have any other History to this topic of who's killing Country Music but the heads of Nashville and the Souhtern California sell outs? If the "style" of music you like isn't being represented on the radio or the award shows it's completely your fault.
Radio and award shows play the stuff that sells, and leave behind the ones that don't sell.
If you want someone like Dale Watson to be on the show and on radio, then every single one of you need to go to his shows and buy his Cd's and request his songs.
It's going to have to be more than just a couple of hundred of you, it should be ALL of you.
How many bought Merle's last album and went to any of his shows this year?(I have it and have seen Merle twice in the past 18 months)
Same for George Jones and a thousand others that are still out there playing and making the kind of music you think country should be. Have any of you gone to their shows and bought their products?
You sit there complaining and bitchin' about something that YOU created, by not supporting the music you love!!! _________________ http://www.oldbluesound.com/about.htm

Alvin,
I completely agree with you.
I'd also remind guys that the monitoring on those shows is hideous and the ability to setup and get your sound together etc much less hear the music to sing to is an absolute disaster. These shows have much more complex 'production values' today than 10-30 years ago which makes it even tougher on the singers.
I'm surprised that so many that love country so much are so nasty to our brethren. We've all been on gigs with horrible sound... think how awful it would be with millions watching and you are totally out of control and can't hear a dang thing!
Go make some music that people want to hear... that crowd was screaming for those people and they are selling a bunch of cds and filling lots of houses in a really tough market. I can't believe we can't be more supportive of folks while we 'make a better mousetrap'.
From now on, I'm adopting Thumper's moms advice...
All grumpiness gets you is NOT invited to the party. |

IMHO, It was good to see George Strait getting an ovation as well he deserves. One of the last times there was a really good country performance was by Leann Womack with the three part fiddle work. I also would like to see Leann Rimes find about five more "Blue's" and ride them to death. I think the on stage balance is the culprit for the artists being off key and that falls into the hands of the engineers. Also, cracking amps and smashing drums does not make country music. Yes the ACM was founded on promoting the west coast music. I'm a former member and a one time nominee. The house band at the Foothill Club "The Tennesseans", won one year for the non touring band category. How about dress code? Don't anyone fall off your Pack A Seat on that one. There was a time we wouldn't even think of playing a job unless we all dressed alike even if it was a white shirt, black pants, and a string tie. _________________ GFI ULTRA D-10, EVANS, FENDER 2000 (WORN OUT) TWIN REVERB W/JBL'S, OLD 4-10 BASSMAN |

I can agree with the majority of the comments. So, give me the old shows like Porter, Flatt & Scruggs, E T, and the Wilburns.
One other comment I feel that's woth mentioning is that a lot of us "older" crowd, that may be on fixed incomes, can't afford the shows of the older artists we like. The venue is often too far away, the prices too high, gas, eats and other considerations. We buy all the CD's that we can manage but you have to realize, the days of $5.00 admissions, $.30 cent gas and such is over. Just my thoughts. _________________ Just remember,

John I agree,I hear a lot of talk here about the REAL country artist[the FEW that's left] on the opry,But seldom do you see them on the TV portion, nothing but hyped rock and roll on TV,From where I iive it's around six hundred miles round trip to Nashwood,Except on the RFD network, there is NO country music on TV or radio.Thank goodness for lp's 78's and 45's.DYKBC. _________________ Hard headed, opinionated old geezer. Alvin Blaine, you hit the nail on the head. Knocked it out of the park. Made a hole-in-one.
People DO NOT support the older artists. When Ray Price made that wonderful CD a few years ago, with as many of the old band on it as possible, who bought a copy? I did, but who else? George Jones, sad to say, does NOT have the voice he did twenty years ago. I think too many folks would rather be bitching, and doing NOTHING AT ALL to actually support the "real" country music that they claim to love. |

well, first, I think Alvin's major neighbors are coyotes and lizards... a dog or two, some cats and horses.
I play in a 'traditional' country band (meaning country songs from the 1940's, 50's, 60's and a few 70's and one or two from the 80's. Nothing beyond that (maybe a george strait song or an alan jackson song)....
My neighbors like me and when I practice they come over on occasion and smile and sometimes they come to gigs (I hate it when they do) but they see it as a NOVELTY. They've even asked me why on earth I like 'that stuff' over Rascal Flatts. They feign respect for the old stuff, but it is too twangy for them. So, they don't buy it or listen to it. Even the cool older guy across the way who loves that stuff and tells me "open the garage door when you play I love to hear it" says he mostly listens to NPR and KNBR for the ballgames.
Everyone has a right to listen to what they want... but, in this era, the people in my neighborhood just don't like that music. It is isolating and even on our gigs half the people are kind of surprised and amused that we aren't gonna break into some new song... heck, I fight the fiddle player every week to NOT play Charlie Daniels songs...
Give me Spade Cooley and Buck Owens and Stonewall Jackson and Lefty and Johnny Bush... but, that era is gone... I'll keep playing the music I love because I don't have to pay the bills with it, I have the luxury of integrity...
I'd still say playing music, any kind of music, is better than not playing at all. |
