No big deal but curious what mfg. packages psg strings with a black ball end. Most of the ones I've seen have a brass or gold colored ball. Only brand that comes to mind is D'Addario cause I know they package some acoustic sets with different colored balls for each string gauge.
Got some on an axe I'm doing set-up on, and would kinda like to replace with same type.
Also, who out there uses a heavier string on #3 and #4 on the E9 tuning? This guitar has one that measures 13.5 [.013, .014???] on the digital vernier caliper for the 3rd. G#. Perhaps the longevity may be compromised, but the tone is fabulous.
Has a .015 on the 4th string as well.
What's been your findings experimenting with these gauges? |

Jerry, D'Addario is the ones with the black ball on the end. I tried a set once, and they're a good sounding set of strings. |

To my knowledge, D'Addario has been using color-coded ball-ends for quite a while, at least for guitar strings. I've never used a PSG set.
Haven't used any in quite a while, but Darco (Martin's budget line of strings) has used black ball-ends for a long time. Never saw any specifically pedal steel strings - but they're inexpensive strings and readily available from Martin as bulk singles. I used to make up real inexpensive sets using these.
I don't recall ever seeing another brand that used all black balls, but that doesn't mean they don't exist. |

Thanks Kenny. Your past experience with them helps to confirm my suspicion. Hope all is well with you.
I can venture a guess that they are complete sets as they are installed on all strings on both necks.
Their current web listing only lists one set for ea. neck however. The standard Nashville gauges.... which wouldn't come with the thicker gauges mentioned in the first post, but they're a really old set.
I'll check that some of the gauges may have been mistakenly installed in the wrong position. |

Hi Jerry, Yes I do believe that D'addario makes a C6th set as well, and both E9th,and C6th sets are the standard "Nashville",or "Sho~Bud" gauges. They are stainless on the wound strings which makes them bright. |
