I ran 6 different searches. I couldn't find anything on this topic, I know it has been discussed. So I thought a quick poll would answer the question.

I am looking to buy a new steel. I have to decide if I want to go with the Day set up or the Emmons setup. I am thinking either one is good, it's just a personal choice. I would like to know what you fine Gentlemen and ladies think.

I need to make a decision quickly, So I put 5 days on this.

thanks for looking.

My observation, for what it's worth:

If you're tall, play Emmons, if you're short, play Day

I think it depends mostly on which direction is most comfortable for rocking your left-foot, but; it takes a little experience at playing to deside which direction is most comfortable for you. Even though it's what you get used to, one is still more comfortable than the other! The only good way to know is to try both ways for a while, unfortunately! I don't think it's possible to recommend one over the other.

Hey TJ

I have always played Emmons set up....just find it more natural when holding B pedal down and rocking A pedal......have tried other guys guitars with Day set up and not comfortable ..tend to press both pedals together

If you mean Emmons, then that is what I play.
I find it more comfortable when you need to use the A & F knee lever combo.
But as mentioned above you need to try both and see what fits your body style.

I think the "Day" setup is a little more comfortable, as it puts the most-used (A&B) pedals closer to the center of the guitar. (The fact that your legs aren't splayed quite as much might be a definite asset!)

Tamara's mistake was a simple one, but those with an eye for detail will note that Buddy's last name was spelled "Emmonds" on one of his albums on the Flying Fish label. Razz

The forum search function is pretty finicky. The spelling could be one reason your search was not succesful.

Anyhow, I know what you meant and I cast my vote for the Emmonds set-up on my Mullens Laughing .

I don't think it matters....it's just what works best for you. My advice, pick one or the other and stay with it Exclamation

These were the 2 best players of the day, One called the other and said I am going to split the pedal into 2 pedals but did not say how he was going to do it, so one did it one way and the other did it different so 2 ways to do it. for some moves days is better lowering the Es and useing the A pedal is eaiser on the day set up, Buddy does this a lot on his tabs.

Once you start with a method it`s hard to switch over again. My first and secound steels were set EMMONS,but when I got my MSA it was set up DAY.The guy who sold me the MSA urged me to give it a 3 week trial before re-seting it up EMMONS,saying it(DAY setup)was much better than EMMONS set up.I gave it at least a month and could`nt get used to it. Just my two cents. Very Happy

There is no real good answer here. It just depends on how you start out..Many Pro players have the Day setup and many have the Emmons. What ever floats your boat. Both have advandages....RS

Are you currently playing? If so, I would stick with what you are using (although I started out on Emmons and switched to Day after about 6 months).

Jimmy Day used to hang out at the Pedalmaster shop in Ft Smith Ar when he was playing in the area. I lived a block from the shop and spent a lot of time there so the Day setup was what I was exposed to and still use it.

Play Day setup, then everyone else won't want to sit in on your guitar. Just kidding.
I play Day setup because I started that way. I can't see any advantages or disadvatages to either setup. When I started playing, Day setup just made more sense to me.Good luck.---Henry

Bath tissue issue--around the back or over to the front. Still does the same great job depending on the dexterity of the user. (I prefer over the top to the front)(Day-rocks)

I rock my foot both ways, so I don't see much advantage to either setup. I have a Franklin pedal in the zero slot, so my A and B pedals are moved over to a more comfortable position. Because of its predominance, having an Emmons setup makes it easier to try other guitars, and easier to trade.

OK...My excuse for the spelling error is middle of the night post from a great steel show. I couldn't sleep thinking about it. I respect and appreciate everyone who posted. It's all good data to help me decide. I probably won't ever buy another guitar so I am trying to be intelligent about this one.

I've just got to the place where I can't bend to all the notes I want to hear. It's a lot of money to spend just to hear the strings raise and lower. I can do that for hours and never actually play a song.

It looks like a 60/40 result. I've always been a bit of a rebel. Very Happy

I'm so blessed to be near all this Pedal steel guitar knowledge and experience. I can really feel the love.

this is what it comes down to. Which way to rock your foot? I think my right side of my left foot is stronger and may have more control. Sometimes ya only want to use the top half or the bottom half of the A pedal.

I haven't used a knee lever very much. Just for one note in one song. My student Fender s-10 only has one knee. So knee levers are new anyway. No habits to break there.

I'm sorta short. 5'6". So there is a vote for Day.

Mr. Shefrin is funny. thanks for taking to time to post. It made me smile. Smile

I currently have the "Big E" set up..ABC, but with my dyslexia maybe this CBA thing would work out real well. Laughing

Never thought about that, but I'm 6'4" and the few times I tried a Day CBA setup, the A/B rocking action was uncomfortable for me, especially in conjunction with the F-lever, which was on LKR. On the other hand, rocking back and forth using the Emmons ABC setup was not so bad from the git go, with the F-lever on LKL.

I'm about 5'8" (at the most) and have always used the Emmons setup. I've played other guitars with the Day setup and after a couple of songs you sort of remember where what is and playing is about the same, neither seems to be better than the other, just that I started with the old (original 1 book version) Sho-Bud E9th instruction book and the Emmons floor pedal setup is what that book used.

But, I don't see how tall you are dictating one way or the other. I know tall pickers that have Day set up and short that have Emmons.
