Just wondering what folks' recommendations were for classic Ray Price CD's with lots of pedal steel on them. I keep finding overly orchestrated (and often "steel-less") "best of" collections at Wal-Mart or, at the opposite extreme, the $300+ 10CD set. As always, thanks in advance for the advice...

A while back Koch re-issued a handful of classic Ray Price albums from the Columbia Records years. They might still be around, though it may require a bit of digging.
In particular NIGHT LIFE and SAN ANTONIO ROSE-- a tribute to Bob Wills-- feature great steel from, respectively, Buddy Emmons and Jimmy Day. And they are great albums all the way through: "concept albums."
THE OTHER WOMAN has some fine steel and great songs too, now that I think of it.

All of the Step One Records (SOR) label had Buddy Emmons on Steel. Step One is out of business but you may still be able to find those CD's (there were several).

Two of the more recent Ray Price CD's are: "Time", and "Run That By Me One More Time" (with Willie Nelson). Both contain excellent choices of material with some great steel from Buddy!!

The Bear Family Box Set of 10 CD's will entertain for decades. Lots of Buddy Emmons and Jimmy Day too.

What Ray said. I have the Box set, and it's worth every penny. You can't beat those old recordings of Jimmy Day and Big E.

As far as what's easily available (and affordable) I'd say the 2 CD "Essential Ray Price" looks like a great deal; it's got some of the early classics, and a good selection of the tunes with Day and Emmons; 30+ tunes, (though some of them are the later ones with no steel). I've also seen a CD recently that has the "Touch My Heart" album and the "Burning Memories" album together on one CD, that'd be a good one for classic Emmons stuff.

Pete,
Excellent suggestions. While the Bear Family box set is expensive, I like it because you get to hear how Ray started out imitating Hank Williams, and then later developed his own style. The chronology is interesting for me. The box set also comes with a bound book (not a booklet) that has tons of info and some great photos ( I also shelled out for a couple of the Bear Family box sets of Ernest Tubb which has some of Buddy Charleton's best work). Now somebody will probably say "Hey Mike, it must be nice to be rich" but I figure that I'll have those recordings for a lifetime so the "price of Price" works out in the end. Smile

btw-I was listening to your work on that old album of Foster and Lloyd, "Version Of The Truth" the other day. Whew, that was awhile back. Great album, and your playing on it is beautiful.

Like Mike and others, I shelled out for the box set. CDWolf has the lowest new price on ebay but you can buy it used on ebay for less. It also covers the Ray Price sings Bob Wills songs that have tons of up front steel and other great cuts with Wade Ray and songs like "Burnt Fingers" where Buddy used the talking Steel apparatus!

Thanks for the kind words, Mike. That was a fun band to be in (though I'd remix that album if they'd let me, they did some weird stuff to my tone after the fact!)

I wish I had that Bear Family Ray Price Box... I'll confess that I borrowed that one and burned a few discs of stuff I didn't already have (and read the book cover to cover). A real monument of classic steel guitar for sure! And it's really great to have "Western Strings" on CD.

I've splurged over the years on the two Ernest Tubb ones that have the classic band with Charlton and Rhodes, and also the Haggard and Osborne Brothers (Hal Rugg!) ones. They are all so well done but damn, they're expensive. But without them so much of the old country would be out of print forever, I'd guess. Occasionally some will pop up used in stores but that's rare in my experience...

Thanks for all of the responses, guys - much appreciated. I've got some real nice instrumental steel guitar recordings of Ray Price tunes but thought I should fill in some gaps in my music collection and check out the original versions from the "shuffle king".

Hey Mike, how are ya...? Has "Reunited" ever been released on CD? I remember wearing that LP out when it came out (late 70's ?).

I've never gotten to see you play with Ray; I'm gonna try to make it to the Ryman for your upcoming show; that should be a night to remember all around... You've got the dream steel playing gig but I know you know that, and nobody belongs there more than you IMHO...

Doing fine Pete, thanks for your kind words. Hope youre well too.

Ive never seen "...Reunited" on CD but Id buy it in a flash if I could. If you make the show, come up and say hello.
The gig is alot of fun and Ray still sings his tail off, just as he has for the past 60+ years. Buddy Emmons once told me that every steel guitarist should do at least one tour with The Chief...how true.
This job isnt what one might think it is: my first gig...I see "A Way To Survive-C" halfway down the set list, with a big red "X" thru it Laughing ... that pretty well sums it up.
If anyone thinks they've got nothing more to learn, one weekened out with RP will change your thinking, boy howdy! Ive worked for some awful good singers, but none like Ray. Its humbling, and I guess thats a good thing.

Reunited from -76 was my first album of Ray Price.
"Different Kind of Flower" sounds so great but so does the whole album Very Happy

A link which captures the "sound" of this album with Ray & Buddy.

Listen to the great vibrato Buddy uses.

I don't know if you can get it on cd or
not it was cut originally on Columbia in I think
1965." Another Bridge To Burn"Emmons on Steel and
Grady Martin on acoustic guitar. It was a monaural
album but contains some of the most beautiful
steel playing imaginable. My all time favorite
Ray Price record.43 Years ago and most of us
would klll to play like that now.Just my opinion
but I have never heard anyone deliver tone and
phrasing like Emmons can.

yup, thats another one! the cut; "Id Fight The World"!! Gary Spaeth and I used to marvel at E's playing on that, and the whole album, really. Maybe the best album from that period....

Ken, is that the DVD with Ray Price, and Jim Reeves with Ernest Tubb? I definitely want to get that. I am a huge fan of Jimmy Day's playing.
Thanks, Mike
