Mark..here is the result of Bobbe Seymour testing the new "705" pickups...they are very good and several friends who have the older chrome 705 pickup like the new ones equally or sightly better than the older ones...hope this helps you...Bill Simmons

BL 705 Pickup Test 1.16.08
We have just completed our testing of the new Lawrence 705. We tested them in four different popular brands of guitar. Emmons, Sho-Bud, Zum and Mullen and still have a set of them in a double neck GFI Expo which we are continuing to test. We have compared this pickup against the most popular pickups available today which we proclaim to be the TruTone single coil, Bill Lawrence LXR16 and the George L most popular models.
The results are what we pretty well expected. That is tone, power, noise cancellation make this pickup superior to everything we’ve tested it against. But the shock of all time, something that we didn’t count on, is how this pickup compares to the original 705 unit. It is superior in every way. We are left with no conclusion except to say that this is the very best steel guitar pickup we have ever put on a guitar.
If you want to improve the sound of any steel guitar, have no hum, great tonal clarity with high power output and greatly improve bass response over the original model, this new black 705 is the way to go. In my opinion statements like this are just that, opinions. What is needed is some type of standard to measure to, as Keith Hilton suggested in another post. Besides, what sounds great to one ear, may sound so-so to another. A larger sampling and possibly some sort of blind testing may be required for more accurate data. Even then, there are those that simply like what they like and no amount of testing or sampling will change their minds. I'm not sure any retailer selling the pickups in question can give a truly unbiased opinion without a more detailed testing procedure.

One thing for sure, old/vintage is not always, better. Although you wouldn't think that by the way folks relish their old equipment. The new amps and pickups, if you are willing to pay for the best, are quite often some of the finest ever built. Something about 'vintage' intrigues us and can cloud reality.
If old were better we would be driving some 1920's - 30's vehicles but it isn't the case. Same with amps and pickups.
That's my opinion and I'm sticking with it.

I agree Gary L. I like to mix and match the old with the new. I have heard the new 705 is better than the old. Then some say it's not as good. Life goes on.
I play a fender twin, but on MY terms. I have it capped and "voiced" for steel, and in a brand new Rick Johnson head cab/extension cab. It gives me MY tone that I like. I also play an old shobud Professional, but it is not stock. It has a modern undercarrage under it, and the play-ability and tone is awesome. I actually like the new Truetones over the stock shobud pickups, so that's what I use. I'm not interested in museum pieces. I want play-ability and tone.
The improvements in the new modern guitars/amps is just stunning, and it's a wonderful time to be playing steel guitar. |
