At one time, Nils Lofgren was on steel. He played a Carter.

I didn't see the footage so I don't know for sure, but if it had fiddle and steel it sounds to me more like the "Seeger Sessions" band which toured a while back and featured Marty Rifkin on steel (there's a concert DVD of that tour available). Nils Lofgren plays mostly guitar with the E-Street band which is touring with Springsteen right now, and he's sometimes played steel on a song or two. But I think Marty has also played steel at least once or twice lately on a song or two with the E-Street band.

Anybody else see the CNN footage that Ron's asking about?

I think Marty used to be on the forum once in a while but haven't noticed him posting here lately. Maybe he'll chime in... Great L.A. player; it'd be fun to hear what he has to say about such a great gig!

Sounds like you've nailed it there, Pete.
It would indeed be cool to get the story from him, if he see's this.
The footage is typically short and in spurts, but still nice to see steel get a good shot.

I saw Marty last January at the NAMM show. He told me he loves working for Bruce. He said Bruce was both the nicest guy and the easiest to work with of any singer he ever backed up.

He told me he plans on staying with the band for as long as Bruce will keep him.

Mike is right…Bruce is one of the nicest people you’ll meet. Been working with him for about 14 years and it’s always a great time. He’s very respectful to other musicians and everyone he comes in contact with.

I’ve been pretty lucky that so many of the artists I’ve worked with have been really cool people.

Hey Pete, it’s been way too long since we last saw each other (I think 1988). We’ll have to fix that!

Hey Marty... has it been that long? That would have been Eddie Rabbitt for me, I could have sworn I'd seen you since those shows... but yeah we're overdue!

So I saw something about a San Jose E-Street band gig that you played on; are you doing this whole tour? If so say hi to Mr. Tallant; he and I got to be pretty good pals while he was living here and played the occasional gigs together. We went to Ireland with Jim Lauderdale some years ago, with Billy Bremner on guitar; a very interesting and fun trip to say the least. I think it's possible we drank a few pints that tour but it's a bit of a blur!

You still haven't told us anything about the CNN footage that started this thing! Cool

Hey Pete, next time I see Garry, I’ll say hi from you.

This tour is just Bruce and the E Street Band. Wasn't able to make it to the San Jose show, but Bruce invited me up to play guitar on a song at the Anaheim show which was big fun.

Not sure what the CNN footage is, but I have a feeling it’s from Jazzfest ’06. At the time, CNN showed clips from that show quite a bit, so they may be using it as stock footage.

Lauderdale, Garry, Billy & you in Ireland…doesn’t get better than that.

Brett: without a doubt you're usually the guy who can tell us exactly what steel player is playing with what artist (and what kind of steel they're playing); you're an amazing source of steel info...

And you're 100% right in this thread too of course!
