Hey Steelers,
The new Campbell Brothers CD, RALLYTIME! live in New Orleans, is now available through Tulip Records. The CD was recorded live at the Old Point Bar in Algiers Point, LA. on the first 2 nights of the 2006 Jazz Fest. The Campbells volunteered their services to come all the way down from NY to play a benefit for the New Orleans Musicians' Clinic, and graciously allowed me to throw a whole bunch of great Louisiana based layers that they had never heard of on the gig with them.
The results were magic. The Campbells arrived early in the day and were given a tour of Katrina's devastating affects on the Lower Ninth Ward, and then piled into the tiny bar where the event was held. Joining them were the greatest of all New Orleans funky sousaphone players, Kirk Joseph of the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, 3 other stellar New Orleans horn players (Tim Green, Jamelle Williams and Eddie Croft), highly acclaimed singer/songwriter Shannon McNally (just recorded a new CD with Dr. John), world-class jazz vocalist Arlee Leonard and killer soul singer/hip-hop producer Sean Carey (currently producing for Juvenile and 50 cent, I know you SGF folks are all big hip-hop fans, right? LOL), and of course, super-sonic steel genius Dave Easley. All of the New Orleans players on this event had been directly affected by Katrina, and the energy between them and the Campbells was unreal. None of them had met the Campbell Brothers until a few hours before the gig, but you could never tell that from the performances. This is the first true meeting of Sacred Steel and New Orleans music in a live context, and it is some beautiful and unique music.
Chuck Campbell asked me to take the recordings of those shows and produce a CD for them, which bowled me over since the Campbell Brothers are hands down my favorite band in the world and I never thought I would get to work with them, let alone produce and release a record by them. My friends at Plus Nine productions in NYC did painstaking work to produce what I think is an incredible mixing and mastering job, coming close to the benchmark I set for them (Tom Dowd's classic early 70s live records for Atlantic: Allman Bros. @ Fillmore East, Aretha/King Curtis @ Fillmore West). Hope you agree
The CD is available through my website at www.marcstonemusic.com. Audio samples and video clips are accessible through the "Sacred Funk" page on the site. The samples ARE NOT the same quality as the master, they were made early in the mixing process are heavily compressed for the web. The final product sounds way better, even though the samples stand up pretty well on their own. Hope you dig it! |
