Get Jeff Newman's Honky Tonk Heroes, that is as close to playing with a band as it gets, you can learn intros, playing in the middle and fills, stay off the singer when his mouth is moving don't. Or you can hit a chord on the first beat of each measure and hold it, that is laying down a bed of chords for the singer to sing over and is acceptable, this should he a great help for beginners.
Above all have fun,

Great comments.........
If I may, I might ad:
When you're a sideman, you are nothing more than a sideman. Learn immediately WHEN to play and when to shut up! There's no room in a 'good band' for a show-off or "a legend in his own mind"! Country music, in particular, already has more than it's share of that type.
Enhance the singers words/lines..... after you've given the song your personal STRONG and MELODIOUS introduction. When it's your turn in the middle of the tune, let your styling, TONE, and everything else really SHINE! LOUD is not beautiful and should be avoided at all costs.
Don't play Motzart in a "Secret Agent Man"; likewise, don't play HILLBILLY in a Hawaiian tune.
Give it YOUR BEST! Have some to be proud of, when you're done with it. |
