I've got an older Webb amp which tends to make a loud popping noise especially when the Reverb is on. Sometimes the 'Pops' are really loud and I'm worried it could blow the speaker. Does anyone have an idea of what may be the problem? The Webb is a great amp but it's distracting when the popping starts. Any ideas out there?

I've got 2 of those puppies... and one did have a weird pop sound. I didn't need or use the Webb reverb... *but* what I did end up doing at Jim Webbs recommendation was to connect the return/send 1/4 inch jack in the back of the amp. As you look at the rear, its the two connectors on the far right. NOT the one to the very far right, but the 2 next to that one. Try that and see if it solves your problem. Here are some easy small connectors I used.

I will give it a try. Will this bypass the reverb unit by doing this procedure? I reckon I'll find out when I try it but I hope not because I use the reverb on some songs other than that if it dont work I guess I can put it in the repair shop. I've had a similar problem on my Peavey Nashville 400 when the reverb is on I get a some strange transient noises similar to the 'popping'??
Thanks for your input Jeff.

I had loud popping, not associated with the reverb.
In my case it was the power caps, and I had them replaced too late - they blew my speaker, an irreplaceable K130.
So, be careful and best of luck. |

Billy,
I don't think the reverb will be effected by this mod. In all honesty, you should consider an external reverb/delay unit. Digital is way better then the springs IMHO. I stopped using spring reverb back when I had hair on my head, which worked its way down to my back, and as time goes on... down to my backside :-) _________________ Jeff Hyman

Hello Friends and Steelers
Thanks for the information, I think the amp does have a bad capacitor as well and I'm gonna get it checked out before it blows my speaker which it almost did at one point.
Best regards,

Billy, Tom Bradshaw I believe is offering a complete reconditioning of older Webb amps, I think even doing the Brad Sarno treatment. He's got techs that know the amp well, so I'd trust them to handle the job right.
As far as reverb, the Webb has a really good sounding reverb tank, imho. Not as versatile as a Lexicon, but quite nice and oh so simple!
