Hey Mike,
Thats cool, she's a bass playing son of a gun, but according to that video, I'd say 1. Jeff Beck is way over-rated, and 2. He should pay that little gal better so she could afford some pants that fit and a bra.

Her name is Tal Wilkenfeld, she's about 22 years old and plays like Jaco. I'm sure she chose her own clothes, since she's NOT a "little gal," and I didn't pay any attention to her boos till Joe was kind enough to mention it.
And Jeff Beck---JEFF BECK???

Jeff Beck has been one of my favorites for many years... I don't think this video is his best, but that doesn't change who he is and what he can do. He's a stylist, either you like his way of playing or you don't. I happen to go for unique styles, I hate copycat sameness, so I like Jeff Beck.
The bassist is amazing. I know we'll hear from the "they oughta be wearin' matchin' outfits" crowd. Whatever. I think what she's wearing is pretty normal for rock & roll.

You say that as if you think you should be able to give your opinion any time you feel like it, in any words you chose. Let me ask you this, if you were at that concert and were introduced to Jeff Beck and the bassist, would you say the same thing to them face to face? There is such a thing as tact. It's not the same as censorship. Most of us learn that as we mature. If we mature.
If you haven't heard much of Jeff Beck, search on his name on youtube and there's quite a bit.
If you still don't like what you find, maybe this is more to your liking, and there are no nasty braless ladies in it:

I agree 100%. Becks instrumental albums "Blow By Blow" and "Wired" contain some of the most intricate and advanced guitar playing I've ever heard. I still can't figure out the meter on his song "Scatterbrain."
BTW steel guitarist Dave Ristrim (I hope that's spelled right) recorded "Cause We Ended As Lovers" on his 'Crisis at the Theme Park" CD.

Jeff is not just a Guitar player, he is an Icon.
Not every player goes out and plays his best every night out, there are times when they, we , play and are just not doin' it...probably the case in the video in question.
here's a thought to ponder regarding Jeff and his multiple decade career.
IF "HE" had a singing voice, such as EC, Jeff would have been every bit as BIG as EC as a performer and player today. But, sadly, he doesn't. When Delaney Bramlett recognized that EC had a GREAT singing voice he put it on vinyl. The rest is history.
Like others , I have been a consistent fan of JB from the git go...Go back and listen to those early records with Nicky Hopkins on keys...
Just seeing JB on the cover of "Having a Rave Up" holding a Tele was enough for me back then ! And thats not a 52 RI..! The people at Fender who dreamed up the RE-ISSUE SERIES probably weren't born yet !

I don't quite get it - I'm sure she appreciates Beck and Corea giving her a hand up, but she's a pretty routine player, so far. Much is made of her having played for only four years, but she switched from guitar, that time doesn't count? There must be thousands of bass players in America alone who can play those parts, I could and the bass player in my band sure could - funny how old fat guys don't get those calls, I wonder if being a cute little girl helps?  She overplays and drops the beat sometimes.

that fellow is definitely an icon & what a unique & crazy style
he still here after all them years

| I host an open blues jam on Thursday nights here in NC, & the host band & myself just learned "Cause We've Ended As Lovers" and performed it for the 1st time last week on 3/27/08(On my birthday as a present to myself, the band was happy to do it for me)...The thing that I noticed was that the bar got quiet when we started that tune & serveral folks walked to the front of the room to listen, there was good applause at the end of the song......that is the power of a Jeff Beck song & arrangement. We worked on the song again this week and the band wants to make it a part of our regular song list...What a birthday treat...Terry V. |

Well, as a former Jaco wannabe, I have to agree. But have you listened to her? I've got to say she's really surprisingly good, given the hype. She DOES have a Jacoish sound, but it's not completely derivative. She's really on the path to potential greatness, in my opinion. I agree with David Mason, she's not perfect. She does overplay a bit (but only a little), but she's so young. You should have heard how much I used to overplay when I was her age!
And let's not forget the obvious: She's got a nice rack.
Oh, come on! I was talking about her amplifier and effects rack. Sheesh, you guys have dirty minds.

Perhaps you're right, Bill. Nobody else will EVER have Jaco's mind. I read a quote from Joni Mitchell(no small ego there, either), where she sais she felt like she was singing backup to a bass player, on those albums that Jaco played on.
But there IS more to Tal than a knocker hanging over a Jazz Bass, isn't there? |

Tal is obviously very talented and accomplished. She is also obviously very young, which means she might not have the judgment to keep out of trouble.
Over the years I've lost 4 friends to drug overdoses, and one to AIDS, that he got from a dirty needle.
Tal has a great future in front of her if she doesn't succumb to the rock and roll lifestyle. Here in Los Angeles (where she also lives) there are drugs everywhere. Coke, heroin, ecstasy, methamphetamine, it's all over. I hope she has the sense to avoid them.

| She is OK. I listened to her CD not bad but certainly not earth shattering. Maybe time will bring her playing some maturity and content. I'll take NHOP's playing over hers any day. While I was watching the clip from Crossroads...I couldn't help but think that Jeff would go nicely with Victor Wooten.... IMHO |
