Welcome to the world of PSG Kyle. Once you get the fever there's no turning back. I'm about an hour north of the Golden Gate Bridge but get down to San Rafael, SF and the East Bay every now and then. Here's my schedule.
Come by and say hello and I'll be happy to talk steel with you and tell you what little I know!

Jim Palenscar seems to have the biggest steel shop on the West Coast: http://www.stlgitr.com/. He's all the way down in San Diego, but it might be worth a trip down there to get a hands-on demo and get set up with a decent rig and some instructional material. If you really love the instrument and are serious about learning it, you really owe yourself something better than some out-of-adjustment used clunker off the internet with no clue what to do with it. Maybe someone from Northern Calif. will chime in about resources closer to you.

A second recommendation for Jim Palenscar. Fortunately for me I live close to his shop.

Welcome to the forum, Kyle.

I live near San Rafael, and there are a couple bands that come through with pedal steel. Watch the listings for Rancho Nicasio, Peri's Saloon in Fairfax, or Iron Springs Brewpub. (Also Fairfax).

Yes, get Dave Zirbel's schedule and watch his delightful playing. Another band worth checking out is Danny Montana and the Bar Association, with Larry Cragg on pedal steel. Dave Z and Dave Phillips have both sat in with them as well.

Jon Mitguard has a couple bands, including 'Barbwyre', and he plays pedal steel and dobro. Link:

While you're on myspace, do a search for 'barassociation' and get their schedule, too.

Good luck in your ventures on the pedal steel.

Gordy

Kyle, welcome to the forum. There are several really fine steel players here in the bay area to go listen to (just a tad difficult to figure out when and where though).

Do catch Dave Zirbel when you get a chance, and as he mentioned, Bobby Black is always a huge treat!

I do have a couple of students that I work with and if you are so inclined, drop me a note as I am always happy to help out with what I can.

Though it's a month off, I'll be playing a double header at The Knockout in SF on Friday May 2nd with two really fine bands....Rancho Deluxe and Dave Gleasons Wasted Days. If you do, let me know that you're coming and we can talk a little shop between sets.
