The Aloha International Steel Guitar Convention was held in
Winchester from July 12-15 with featured guest, Paul Kim from Hawaii.
The Convention started with 4 workshops conducted by L.T. Zinn on Steel Bar
Technique (Tremolo, Slants Forword/Reverse), Modulation, Playing Behind a Vocalist(Improvising) and Chord Progressions.
There were about 35 steel guitarist performing for 3-days at the convention
in Winchester. There were 4 steel guitarists with roots in Hawaiian music
performing-
Duke “Kaleolani” Ching, Herbert “Hapake” Hanawahine, Bobby Ingano, and
Paul “Pa’ulo” Kim. Two of them now live on the Mainland. All of them have
recordings if you are interested in hearing more Hawaiian licks. These guys
really show us how to do the real Hawaiian stuff. Herbert Hanawahine is one of the greatest at harmonics, especially “Whispering Lullaby.”
Then there were some North American Mainland ha’oles who held their own at the
convention–
L.T. Zinn (Steel Guitar Hall of Fame) and Mike Scott who also have recordings.
Other steelers included Terry Miller (a real show stopper), Warren Slavin, Doug Smith, Ivan Reddington,Hal Smith,
Sharon Denny, Gerald Ross, Don Fullmer, Frank Brandenburg, Kay Koster,
Gene McGowan, Ron Simpson, and others.
The local restaurants enjoyed the flavor of Old Hawaii with the talents of some of our steel guitarists. One big knock down drag out steel guitar festival was held at the
Winchester Club House. This was a very informal, “let you hair down” type of event with a lot of laughs. Everyone always has a good time.
Some you that attended might contribute with other highlights.
Aloha,
Don
