I had an idea for an upcoming major steel show. I think Steel Guitar Idol would be fun for all involved and entertaining too.

There would need to be the following rules:

The player must be age 28 or younger –OR- age 60 or older. (That would remove the unfair and stiff competition that would be brought by the renaissance players – fantastic young-ish Nashville type pro road players, veteran players who are in their prime, etc.)

The player must not have a recording contract for steel guitar instrumental albums and may not currently have any steel guitar instrumentals available for purchase. The player would be disqualified if any recordings available in the music section of The Steel Guitar Forum bear the player’s name.

The player must play E9th or C6th or Extended E9th or a Universal tuning on a pedal steel guitar..

The player must submit to a standardized, juried evaluation process that would include a “first elimination round” wherein no back up band would be provided. No tracks would be allowed either.

The player may play their own steel guitar but must use the sponsor provided state-of-the-art amplification equipment (Hmmm…I wonder what that might be)

The player must agree to avoid any comments about shameless product placement by participating sponsors.

There would of course be three judges.

Judge #1 – Can potentially be heard saying “Yo Hoss, check it out” or “you need to raise the bar”

Judge #2 – The most encouraging judge by far. Can potentially be heard saying “You are the light in a shining sea of wonderful glissandos” or “You were born to do this”

Judge #3 - They could potentially be heard saying “Next”

Any nominations for the judges?

Voting would be by paper ballot to be placed in the cardboard box at the back of the room. Tabulation of votes would be by the show promoter’s teenage daughter who couldn’t care less about steel guitar music.

The winner would play with two veteran steel guitar heroes in the concert portion of the show. The winner would be required to take serious crap from the two aforementioned hero players because winner just blew aforementioned heroes off stage. The winner would also receive an official steel guitar nickname exclusive of Wimpy, Buddy, Dumplin’, Big E, Sonny, Smiley or Tater.

The ISGA Convention would be out because they already have a wonderful talent search.

I am half kidding but I am also half serious.
