I understand there were a number of different models of the Peavey Scorpion, including the "plus" and "ultra" (I think).

Does anyone have a complete list of the Scorpion variants, and how they differed in tone or application?

Thanks.

The plain ol' Scorpion was designed as a lead guitar speaker, very rugged and kinda "middy" sounding. The Plus series added Kevlar cones, and (I think) a slightly heavier magnet, and were used in just about all applications. The Ultra is the newest one, a 12" having a huge magnet structure. It's billed as a super-duty lead guitar speaker.

Any of these speakers will work for steel (I'm using the original Scorps, myself), depending on what kind of sound you're looking for, and what kind of amp you're pushing them with. The amp, I feel, is a far more critical part of the equation for pedal steel applications than the speaker is.

Not wanting to trash the original speaker, I built a sub-baffleboard, and installed a 12" Scorpion Plus in my 1956 Fender Pro Amp. Sounds fabulous!

howdy, does that mean my 12inch, scorpion, in my 20 year old bandit, is just the standard one or is there an external marking difference, lew.

I have a Bandit 65 I bought new in'85. I replaced the scorpion with the replacement basket S-12825. The original speaker dust cover was a very thin screen type of material. The replacement dust cover is a heavier type material and I believe the replacemtn sounds better than the original. I prefer the Scorpion over the Sheffield. Peavey now puts a version of the Blue Marvel in the new Bandits. If you replace the basket, be sure to clean the grove in the magnet.

howdy, after taking more interest in these comments, i noticed the, fabric or what ever was covering the hole in the centre of the magnet had perished, i cleaned all the loose bits out , it doesn,t effect the sound, what is its purpose, BANDIT 65, lew.
