I have been dragging this Amp setup around for the last 3 months. I use a 1970 Vintage Studio Master Trynor tube amp and not the 4-10"speakers which has a wonderful sound "I love the warm sound of a tube amp on steel"
I don't really want to change this Trynor amp and put a 15" speaker in it, becuase I have never seen many of these amps around and I love the sound of this amp with a guitar "the trem setting is awsome"
The Nashville 400 with mod.is a great sounding amp lots of low end! But does not have a warm tube sound that I like on a steel " personal taste" So I use the 15" speaker and 400 as a pre-amp! it sounds great..
I was thinking of selling both amps and going with a Fender Twin with a 15" in her.
What do you guys think, should I tear apart the Tryaner amp and put a 15" in her?Between ... a D-10 and these amps its killing me!
for some reason I can not upload the pics...but i will soon@ _________________ MARLEN S10 with a Crate V50 with custom speakers .. Local Artist 💪💪 |

If you like the Traynor, keep it. Once its gone..its gone. I have a 59' Fender Reissue Bassman that came with 4-10's. Great guitar amp but not for steel. So I made a new baffle board and installed a JBL D-130 in it. Its great for steel and still pretty good for guitar and I saved the 4-10's and the baffle board just incase I ever wanted to switch it back over.
Just an idea. You wouldn't be destroying the amps originality if you kept the speakers and baffle.

Maybe this is best moved to the Electronics section.
More responses there too.
There is a Studio Mate amp, YGM-4
but that has 4, 8" speakers and only 25W into 8 ohms.
See
http://www.yorkville.com/print.asp?type=71&cat=46&id=294
Which is yours?
The YRM-1SC Reverb Master has 4-10's; maybe?
I see 4 possible courses of action.
Sell it all; get a tube amp with a 15"
Build a cab that holds the Traynor electronics
and a 15"
Buy a 15" box and build a box that holds the Traynor electronics
But keep the original cab in storage.
Find a cheaper old tube amp w/1 15 and redo the eq closer to the Traynor's.
Nothing a good tech can't deal with in an afternoon.
The schematic doesn't look much different than
a ballsy 60's Fender Tremulux.
2 push-pull output tubes and variations of
the standard 12AX7 preamp and phase inverter driver sections.
Slight variations, and slightly different output tubes.
Other wise essentially early 60's fender style amp.
REMEMBER there is likely
315-400volts DC stored inside the CAPS
of this amp even when turned off.
IF you DON'T know what NOT to do
DO NOT go in yourself.
There are no user serviceable parts.
But touch the wrong places with two fingers
and it can
stop your heart.... _________________ DLD, Chili farmer. Plus bananas and papaya too.

One solution would be to put the Traynor amp in a head cab (from Rick Johnson, Mojotone, etc.) and put a 15" speaker in a separate cab. You could rig it so you can use the Traynor head with either the 15 or the original 4x10. But there may be impedance matching problems. I don't know what the Traynor amp is built for, but many 4x10s are designed for 2 ohm loads. Putting an 8 ohm 15 with that will loose a lot of volume and clean headroom. This is also a problem with putting a 15 in a tube combo amp. Most tube amps are 4 ohm, and most 15s are 8 ohms. But some amps have an 8 ohm transformer tap, and there are 4 ohm 15s out there. |

keep the original amp cabinet in your closet. make a nice portable cabinet top for the amp and a separate box for a 15. i don't think you'll get that kind of warmth out of a twin with 15. |

I blanked
As D. Dogg says check your speakers impedances.
This is important for making the Traynor play nice
and not do an imitation of the Gucci's
screwing up 4th of July evening.
4 10's could be a mix of parallel and series.
or series.
And each amp series will likely be differently done.
Ya gotta look and check.
You may have to go with 2 12's in parallel
to make a decent match to output transformer
and keep weight down. _________________ DLD, Chili farmer. Plus bananas and papaya too.

Hi Keith
Yeah sounds good.
Here is a list of Traynor schmatics.
http://www.el34world.com/charts/Diagrams.htm
I am also on this tube amp building forum.
Pick the one that you think is yours.
Chances are we can change a cap or two
and get more bottom back in it.
With out it starting to motorboat or break up.
I was looking at the YBA-4 and there are a few reasons
why it's not to bottomy, they are intentional,
but not absolute to the circuit I suspect.
Anything can be wteaked alittle bit and see how it is then.
A curious version of a Presence control,
and some caps that seem to be a bit higher pass/lower cut,
than say a Fender would be in the same place.
Lowering the roll off freq would add back some bass.
two middle circuit 0.01 caps signal changed to .022 say.
If you have an early cap not passing the lows,
then you never get them back later.
I could make it run a bit hotter,
but it is a fixed bias amp,
so you can cool the output down if needed.
I would have liked to hear the C6 neck too. _________________ DLD, Chili farmer. Plus bananas and papaya too.
