I’ve been examining the chord possibilities of Reeces’s Double 12 String tuning, which opens up tremendous possibilities. The great discovery was realizing that I could alter the 5th string C note a half step to C# and open up even more possibilities.
I have examined most of the 3 and 4 note chords and have run the standard 7th chords through their inversions. By making the one change to the C, I was able to add many new chord options. Below is a list of all the chord possibilities I’ve been able to find by combining the possibilities of both necks and adding my change to the 5th string. I did not include any grips that seemed impractical or even slightly difficult. All grips are easy to master. I also did not take into account voicings: just if I could make the 3 or 4 note chord easily without any slants whatsoever.
Below are the list of chords possible with the Reece (slightly altered) Double Neck Tuning:
Triads:
Maj
Maj (1st Inversion)
Maj (2nd Inversion)
Min
Min (1st Inversion)
Min (2nd Inversion)
Diminished
Diminished (First Inversion)
Diminished (2nd Inversion)
Sus4
Sus4 (1st Inversion)
Sus4 (2nd Inversion)
Sus2
Sus2 (1st Inversion)
Sus2 (2nd Inversion)
Four Note Chords:
MAJ7
Maj7 (1st Inversion)
Maj7 (2nd Inversion)
Maj7 (3rd Inversion)
Dom7
Dom7 (2nd Inversion)
Dom7 (3rd Inversion)
Min7
Min7 (1st Inversion)
Min7 (2nd Inversion)
Min7 (3rd Inversion)
Min75b(half Diminished – 2nd Inversion)
Min75b (hald Diminished – 3rd Inversion)
Maj(add9)
Maj6
Maj75b
Min(add 9)
Min6b
Dom7sus4
The following chords are possible by the inclusion of the second 12 string neck. These chords were not easily available in the original 12 string Reece tuning:
Diminished
Diminished (First Inversion)
Diminished (2nd Inversion)
Dom7
Dom7 (2nd Inversion)
Dom7 (3rd Inversion)
Min75b(half Diminished – 2nd Inversion)
Min75b (hald Diminished – 3rd Inversion)
Maj75b

I started my learning by working out the chords to Miles Davis's All Blues from the Kind of Blue Album.
The new chord possibilities available through the second 12 sting neck are just amazing - being able to go back and forth to get full complex chords without any reduction is truly mind-blowing. I ran the double 12 through a Podxt with Tommy Dodd's Leslie organ simulation while playing the All Blues chord changes and it took my breath away. |

So Bill-- it's been a long day, & I spose the mental fog is rolling in, but just to be clear...did you sharp the fifth string by a half step on BOTH necks to get these results?

No, just the second neck. The one with the new Reece 12 string tuning. |
