Hi All,
I would like to know what tuning to use for a tune
like "Choo Choo Cha Boogie" on a 6 strings lap steel.
What I mean is which tuning will allow to play the chords and lead with minimum changes and slants.
Thank you very much,
Abel |

Abel,
Nice pics on your web site!
I created a page full of tabs and an introduction to playing the Cth 6 string lap steel with a bottom C and also with a bottom C# note. Listen to a few of the tabs and see if some of the sounds interest you. If so this tuning may be for you!

What kind of amp is that behind the sax player? Too cool! |

Abel, the late head of the guitar department at Berklee, a fellow named Bill Leavitt, invented a 6 string lap steel tuning that allows for all sports of jazz chords. If you do a search of this forum for the words "Leavett tuning" you'll probbly find a reference to it.
Also, his protegé, Mike Idhe, (who also teaches at Berklee) occasionally posts here. You might look him up too.
If you feel that you want to stick with a lap steel and not get into pedals, this might be the best tuning for you. _________________ Please visit my web site and Soundcloud page and listen to the music posted there.

Thank you all,
A wealth of information indeed.
Greg,
A very helpful site (by the way your 1245 Swing is delightful). Unfortunately I don't read or write tabs. Don't know waht 19 or 12 mean. I wish I could see you play your notes. For example
The Lap Tab 5 - Simple Scales - Key Of C:
Do you do some of the double-stops using slants?.
Everything I need is there, I just can't read it.
I find it hard to do a full 9th chord like I do on a regular guitar. I wish I could see the position of the hand on the fretboard. I guess I ' ll have to get a video.
I will try with the bottom C# to see what I can get.
Thank you much.
Mike,
I did a search on "Bill Leavitt" and found the MP3 sampling played by Roy Thompson using the C6TH with the C# bottom. What a smooth player he is.
I wish I had the backing tracks of those tunes are they are excellent for learning steel.
I guess I have to do more digging around Bill Leavitt as there a tons of posts.
Thank you for your help.
Best Regard,
Abel |
