Probably Joey Melson. He was pretty instrumental in the Big O's movement into that style of music. Joey, a couple years younger than I, was very active here in the west Texas area when Roy was moving into TV in Midland, Texas pretty heavily. Joey had a band in Odessa I think...Been a long time ago. Emmett Roach and a couple of other forumites can probably help more. I know Emmett was over there at that time, and so was Bobby Tuttle, and Bobby Rountree.

I've heard that Bobby Goldsboro did a guitar stint with Roy before he became famous, it could have been him on one of the parts......JH in Va. _________________ Don't matter who's in Austin (or anywhere else) Ralph Mooney is still the king!!! |

Guess all you want, the answer is still the E Bros.
I don't have the foggiest who toured with him, but it was them on the recording ![Exclamation](images/smiles/icon_exclaim.gif) |

I wouldn't argue with anyone on who appears on each and every recording Roy made of this song but I thought that my memory served me somewhat, even in my old age so I took the time to 'google' up Joe Melson and found this:
http://joemelson.com/songs.php
Quote from second paragraph of this site:
"Joe's voice is the first one heard on "Only The Lonely" singing the "dum, dum, dum, dumbe do wah" that set the stage for Roy's powerhouse vocals. Other notable hits written by Joe and Roy include: "Blue Angel," "I'm Hurtin'," "The Crowd," "Up Town" and the black-clad singer's 1967 comeback, "Cry Softly Lonely One." Joe wrote over 40% of Roy's BMI award winning songs. Roy may have been a legendary recording artist, but it takes friends and legendary songwriters like Joe Melson to make it all come together."
And it's really not that important except to give credit to Joey, a friend. I'm sure in some of the recordings Roy made there would have to be others who did it, but I just know who did it first.

Fred I checked it out and I really appreciate you digging it up..
There are a great many situations like this and I am interested.
I,as a young, small market DJ was privileged to play these records when they were NEW and fresh..
I also picked a little ChuckNBuckNChet type "jack-leg" guitar and enjoyed playing these tunes..
thanks again,

B.J. I'm sure the other guys have it right also because O made several cuts of that song just to let you know I'm not trying to be 'King of the Hill". I just finished doing a lot updating my music library regarding Orbison's songs and some of his cuts on old favorites. In that process i ran across a singer, Chris Isaak, and his band the Silvertones; these cats are good so I'll enter this You Tube of them doing Only the Lonely and see what you guys think of this singer and group:

I really like their style. Whatta' you think?

Fred, I love 'ya like a brother, but that guy is way too pitchy for my ears. He's okay on the strong lines, but his subdued passages (especially the first line) are sung flatter than a board. Embarrassing, really.
Now maybe the key was too low, or maybe he had a cold, or maybe the monitors were in another county. I just know that if I sang a song, and it came out like that (and I'm not a singer, so it probably would), I sure wouldn't put it on youtoob! |

Donny, has to be what makes horse races. Some like it and some don't. Flat, sharp, or whatever, my old ears are fading fast, but whatever the cats are, it rang my bell. I really like the group and I just recently found Chris and one of the other guys in the group came from "music rich" Stockton Cal. I bet some of the Left Coast guys could add something to "this High Jacking" even though I didn't intend it for that.

Phredd and Donny....No worry about a Hijack" or apology..I appreciate opinions and different perspectives !!
I thought the Issacks band was pretty tight even tho Cris vocalizing slipped off a bit.
Speak your piece!!Thanks again.

BJ. everyone who's known me for any amount of time is aware I'm nearly deaf in both ears but I know what I like and Donnie's been straightening me out for a great while. Since I've quit playing out except for our VA Hospital dealie on Sunday's I've been redoing my Music History file and ran across this group. I thought there were some areas where I could hear the old Orbison licks so I posted it. There are more than one group who've slid into prominence by copying name singers for certain.

Notwithstanding a bad take or two, Chris Isaac is the best modern crooner since the golden years of Elvis and Orbison. And he has had several modern hits with his accomplished retro crooner style. Believe me, women love him. You can see some of his better stuff on YouTube. Here's something to take a gander at Chris and Lee Ann. The singing isn't necessarily his best, but the visual is sure fun, and I'm not talking about him. ![Winking](images/smiles/icon_winking.gif) |

Doggett, I finally got to agree with you. Chris Isaak IS a bit of a throwback, but he makes good music. And the visuals on that YouTube spot were pretty cool, too !!! |

Wow, I can see why you thought they were so good. Great presentation. Good choice and now I have to buy more cds, better than not having to buy more cds.And Lee Ann has matured into a great singer and very pretty young lady..jr |

Chris Issac is a great singer of that style but he's no Roy Orbison or Elvis. Still, it's hard not to appreciate the guy's melodic sensibilities. I saw him play to about 50 people at the King's Head Inn on his first tour. His weakness, as far as his recordings go, is the lack of better than average songs. IMO |

It was the Anita Kerr singers, led by Joe Melson.
The line was actually grafted in from another song Roy had bought, "Come back to me, My Love".
