They are used by classical guitarists on classical guitars. I have never heard of anyone using them for lap style playing. Steel (and/or bronze) strings produce a louder sound and more desired tone.

That being said, both JJ Cale and Leo Kottke (and surely others I don't know about!) have played slide (probably "upright"/bottleneck style) on nylon string guitars, with very pleasant sounding results.

I had a buddy that bought a 12 string because Leo Kottke can play the individual strings, not just the courses. That didn't work out so well for him.

I´m not a good example...it´s desperation that led me to it...but I use nylon strings.

We are having a house built, it´s 6 months behind shedule and my PSG is in storage. So Im learning Leavitt on a 6 string soloette nylon string guitar, using a drinking glass as a slide.

Sounds sweet.

In the 2nd yr that the JB and shot jackson frypans were being made, Shot brought a fp with nylon strgs to Winchester conv. I played it for about three days and it had smooth great tone. However for western swing it was too sweet and shot and I tried all kinds of settings on many different amps to no avail to give it some punch. The guitar had a ceramic pickup located under the top of the guitar just infront of where the normal PUP would be located. If all you were playing was Hawaiian, pop stdrs, and country ballads It was great. cc
