Looking for a replacement for the P-90 that Gibson installed in their lap steels after they switched from the wide oval pickup.
These differ from the more common P-90 used on electric Spanish guitars in at least one aspect (the wider string spacing between the adjustable pole pieces) that makes them unique and not interchangeable.
Lots of folks offer P-90 pickups with pole pieces to retrofit a standard guitar. Does anyone make a replacement with the wider spacing for lap steels? |

I think the standard P90 string spacing is about 50mm wide, pole center to far pole center. I find that just about right and it matches my Asher. I seem to recall that there is a wider one. I think there is a 53mm spacing offered as well by Kinman.

otherwise, you might want to have it rewound. Jason Lollar would probably do it nicely. Good luck. _________________ To write with a broken pencil is pointless. |

Tom, thanks for your reply. I believe that's correct for Gibson's standard guitar version of the P-90.
The lap steel P-90 on my 1953 Gibson Century measures approximately 58mm pole to pole. Don't need a rewind because it works fine and sounds fantastic.
Need an identical replacement for another instrument which has a guitar-style P-90 retrofitted, with the 50mm spacing, which is clearly too narrow:
Thanks for the tip about Kinman. Was unaware of them -- looks interesting. |

Have yet to receive the pickup. According to its tracking info, the parcel got waylaid to New York by the USPS. (Can't imagine why it would go from Sacramento to New York City en route to Lake Woebegone???)
It will probably take a few days after delivery before the Century Deluxe is reassembled and functional. Its pots, caps, wiring, as well as the pickup, were unoriginal. After the control cavity is properly shielded, all new electronics will be installed along with the new pickup.
Will try to provide a sound clip after the instrument is reassembled and strung up. |

Nope. None of his stock steel guitar pickups meet both of the following requirements:
1) 58mm string spacing
2) Fit inside the pickup rout on the Gibson |

Too bad! His pickups are great! I have a Cooder Strat with the Chicago pickup. It's awesome! |

I just heard from Jason. Here is his reply;
" my answer would be I have always made custom one of a kind pickups from scratch and have made many for forum members over the last 15 or 20 years- if its not on my site it can be worthwhile emailing and ask about what you need and give as many specifics as possible. I often have steel pickups already designed for old steel guitar models" |

Jason Lollar has been very helpful with me. In a series of e-mails beginning in September, he explained his services very thoroughly. Jason said he could build a replacement pickup for a Gibson BR-9 for $200.00. I'm uncertain whether or not the P-90 on a BR-9 has 58mm spacing. Assuming it does, the Lollar would have been perfect.
Jerry Sentell built the pickup pictured above for $60.00, shipped to my mailbox.
Obviously, Lollar Pickups are highly esteemed. I have heard and read nothing but good things about them. Likewise, the Sentell pickups have scored positive reviews on all accounts.
The Lollar pickup was a serious contender, but I opted for the Sentell purely because of the price point. Just didn't seem to make much sense to pay almost as much for the pickup as I did for the Gibson it's gonna be installed in.
Would the Lollar pickup be more than three times better than the Sentell?
If I ever decided to sell the Gibson, would a Lollar pickup merit a $140.00 premium?
My new Sentell P-90 was delivered today. Hope to have the instrument assembled in the next few days. Will report back. |

fender jazzmaster guitars use a wider single coil. don't know if it will fit or if it meets your sonic expectancy.

Received the new LS5 late last week and finally have it installed in the old Gibson. It exceeded my sonic expectations and above all was an exceptional value.
I would not hesitate to recommend Jerry Sentell to anyone desiring a custom-wound pickup at a very reasonable price.
For anyone who needs a replacement P-90 pickup with 58mm polepiece spacing for their old Gibson, the Sentell LS5 will fill the bill.

i would venture to add that pickups are best wound for the specific guitar.
That means the winder should have your guitar to listen to, to hear its tone to have a better idea of what to do. Not just guess.
A one size fits all approach is hit and miss.
Just adding a "better" pickup will not guaranty the best results off the bat.
Since not every guitar sounds the same means your guitar has its own tone situation.
But you could get lucky. You, and the winder. _________________ ShoBud The Pro 1
